Two seeds stumble at Bangkok 10K's opener

Fifth seed Vietnamese Nguyen Thuy-Dung was shocked by local player Kanyapat Narattana in the opening round of "PTT Women's Circuit 1" at Rama Garden Hotel Tennis Center, Bangkok, Thailand on Monday (June 8, 2009). Narattana came back from a set down to defeat Nguyen 5-7, 6-2, 7-5. Also becoming casualty was eighth seed Parija Maloo from India after she lost easily to German qualifier Sarah-Rebecca Sekulic 1-6, 2-6.

Two Indonesians also claimed their opening round victory when third seed Jessy Rompies and seventh seed Lavinia Tananta had comfortable win over their opponents. Rompies edged past her compatriot Beatrice Gumulya 6-3, 6-4. As for Gumulya, she has been struggling to advance into second round in all four tourneys this season. While Tananta had breakthrough as she reached the next round by dispatching local player Sophia Mulsap 6-2, 6-2. In her two previous tourneys in East Kalimantan, Tananta exited in the opening round.

On Tuesday (June 9, 2009) top seed Ayu Fani Damayanti began her campaign by ousting South Korean qualifier Yoo Mi 6-2, 6-1. Meanwhile second seed Varatchaya Wongteanchai of Thailand bounced back and battled past New Zealander Ellen Barry 0-6, 6-3, 6-0. Also moving on into second round was fourth seed Nungnadda "Jib" Wannasuk from Thailand after she cruised past Indian Parul Goswami 6-2, 6-3.

The only surprise in doubles' first round was the departure of number two seeds, Lizaan Du Plessis and Han Sung-Hee (South Africa/South Korea) after they bowed out to wild card pair He Chun-Yan and Natchanok Saenyaukhot (China/Thailand) 4-6, 3-6.
