Top seed Robson bows out at Roland Garros
Top seed Laura Robson of Great Britain crashed out in the second round or round 32 at Roland Garros on Tuesday (June 2, 2009). The Wimbledon 2008 junior champion and current world junior number one could not handle such stiff challenge from Pole Sandra Zaniewska. In the opening set, it was truly close match as it went into tie-break but Zaniewska showed her better mental toughness than her opponent in sealing 12-10. In second set, Robson stormed back quickly to take 6-1 and forced the battle into third set. In the end, Zaniewska played better and closed it out 6-3. In round 16, Zaniewska will clash with South African Chanel Simmonds who posted a slight surprise as she won over her ITF A team mate, sixteenth seed Veronica Cepede Royg from Paraguay with comfortable 6-1, 6-3 victory.
Local player and ninth seed Katerina Mladenovic also moved into round 16 after she cruised past Slovak Jana Cepelova 6-1, 6-3. Meanwhile, the only Asian left standing was Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan and she got her ticket into round 16 as she edged past Lesley Kerkhove of the Netherlands 6-4, 6-4.
More upsets happened in the only two matches of round 16 on Tuesday. The recent winner of “50th Trofeo Bonfiglio”, a Grade A tourney in Milan, Italy – 15th seed and qualifier Sloane Stephens from Florida, USA demonstrated her determination to beat fourth seed Hungarian Timea Babos 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Another surprise was made by 11th seed Croat Silvia Njiric as she battled past 8th seed Elena Bogdan of Romania 7-5, 6-0.
In doubles’ first round, top seed pair Ana Bogdan/Ajla Tomjlanovic (Romania/Croatia) also crashed out after they were shocked by duo Ksenia Kirillova/Martina Trevisan (Russia/Italy) 2-6, 1-6.
