Deja vu for Ana Bogdan in Paris
Biggest shock of the day when second seed Ana Bogdan of Romania bundled out as she bowed out to Lesley Kerkhove from the Netherlands in the opening round (round 64) at Roland Garros on Monday, June 1, 2009. Appearing in her second stint at Roland Garros, currently ranked at ITF 2 Bogdan faced strong challenge by Dutch Kerkhove and lost 5-7, 7-6(3), 1-6. Last year in her first ever participation at Roland Garros, 16 years old Bogdan also exited in round 64 after she was ousted by another Dutch Richel Hogenkamp in three sets. In her total of five grand slams’ performance, Bogdan claimed her best outcome at Australian Open 2009 when she finished as semi-finalist as she lost to the eventual winner, Russian Ksenia Pervak. Bogdan also crashed out in the opening round at Wimbledon and US Open last year.
Another surprise was the departure of Thai sensation and fifth seed Noppawan “Nok” Lertcheewakarn as she was beaten by Dutch girl, Richel Hogenkamp 4-6, 3-6 in the first round on Monday’s first match on court 14. Last year in her appearance here at Roland Garros, Lertcheewakarn failed to reach quarterfinals as she was defeated in round 16. Lertcheewakarn made history as she was once ranked ITF 1 as per December 8, 2008. In the meantime, another upset in the opening round was made by local player Gracia Radovanovic when she edged past thirteenth seed Heather Watson from Great Britain 7-5, 6-4.
Top seed Laura Robson of Great Britain had to fight hard in her opening round as she was a set down but managed to found her own game back to beat Russian Karina Pimkina 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Two members of ITF A team, sixteenth seed Veronica Cepede Royg of Paraguay and South African Chanel Simmonds posted first round victory then they will battle each other in round 32. Cepede Royg cruised past Maryna Zanevska from Ukraine 6-2, 7-5, while Simmonds breezed past Canadian Katarena Paliivets 6-2, 6-1.
In several second round actions, a surprise was capitalized by Peruvian qualifier Bianca Botto after she came back from a set deficit to topple twelveth seed Aussie Olivia Rogowska 2-6, 6-1, 9-7. Botto sneaked in to advance into round 16 together with third seed Russian Ksenia Pervak, fourth seed Hungarian Timea Babos who both survived scare in three sets, then followed by sixth seed Croat Ajla Tomljanovic, eighth seed Elena Bogdan of Romania, eleventh seed Croat Silvia Njiric, fourteenth seed Christina Mc Hale of USA and fifteenth seed Floridian Sloane Stephens.
In doubles’ first round, duo Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing of Indonesia and Fatma Al-Nabhani from Oman played quite impressive throughout the match despite their defeat to sixth seed pair Yana Buchina/Ksenia Pervak of Russia. Playing really well, duo Ysidora Tobing/Nabhani outfoxed Russian duet Buchina/Pervak 6-1 in 22 minutes to claim the opening set. Eventually the Russian duo fought back to seal 6-4 (in 40 minutes) in second set and they closed it out 12-10 in 17 minutes. It was indeed bad luck for duo Ysidora Tobing/Nabhani!
