Report card - no title for Indonesians at ITF Grade 4 Thamrin Cup 2009

Personally, I am very familiar with "Thamrin Cup" since I was one of the participants back in the good old days when it was still a national junior tourney as part of Jakarta's anniversary. Then in June 2003, "Thamrin Cup" made its debut as an ITF Grade 5 tourney and it was a great inauguration as Indonesian players took all the titles.

Boys singles' title was claimed by second seed Imanuel Prakoso who crushed his compatriot 12th seed Al Imron 6-1, 6-0 in the final. Meanwhile fourth seed pair Armendio Anggara/Tio Lana Putra grabbed doubles' title as they ousted seventh seed duo Imanuel Prabowo/Al Imron 7-6(3), 6-2. For an update, the twin Imanuel Prakoso and Imanuel Prabowo have graduated from Chicago State University last year.

Top seed Maya Rosa came out as girls singles' winner after she had to work hard to beat third seed Septi Nindya Yutami Mende 1-6, 6-3, 6-0. In doubles' final it was perfect battle between top seed Sandy Gumulya/Septi Mende who edged past second seed pair Ayu Fani Damayanti/Maya Rosa 6-4, 6-3. Now, Rosa is working at a state-related company in Jakarta, while Mende is studying law at the prestigious Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta.

A year later in 2004, "Thamrin Cup" was upgraded to be an ITF Grade 4 tourney. Few years ago, this tourney was actually eligible to be an ITF Grade 3 tournament but the local committee wanted to stick to their commitment so that local players could enter it. In my opinion, the local committee also had problem to get more fund to elevate as an ITF Grade 3 tourney since it should provide hospitality for all main draw players until elimination.

Taking place for its 7th year, "Thamrin Cup" was held last week at Kelapa Gading Sport Center in North Jakarta. For boys, the overall result was pretty bad while girls singles' domination by local players in the last three years was halted by the Chinese girls.

Best results in boys singles only until round 16 as seventh seed Ega Uneputty and Michael Tjuatjadarma crashed out. While in girls singles, Nadya Syarifah made the best result into quarterfinals when she bowed out the eventual winner, China's Tang Haochen.
