Three Indonesians into quarterfinals at Bangkok 10K


All six seeds advanced into quarterfinals including three seeded players from “Big Mama” camp in Ragunan, Jakarta at "PTT Women's Circuit 1" in Rama Garden Hotel Tennis Center, Bangkok, Thailand on Wednesday (June 10, 2009). In second round, top seed Ayu Fani Damayanti did not have much trouble in beating Aussie’s lucky loser Renee Binnie 6-2, 6-1. The Balinese player will challenge by sixth seed South African Lizaan Du Plessis in the last eight round. Du Plessis posted her victory over another Aussie Daniela Scivetti 76(4), 6-1.

Number 2 seed, Varatchaya Wongteanchai of Thailand clinched her quarterfinals’ berth after she disposed Japanese Tomoko Dokei 7-5, 6-3. In the next round, Wongteanchai will face South Korean Han Sung-Hee who came back from a close first set down and managed to regrouped herself to defeat Thai teenager Kanyapat Narattana 6-7(4), 6-0, 6-1. Meanwhile third seed and 19 years old Jessy Rompies of Indonesia edged past a lefty Thai qualifier Kobkanok Upapong 6-4, 6-1, followed by fourth seed Nungnadda “Jib” Wannasuk from Thailand as she survived a strong opposition from her compatriot and wild card Nicha “Eve” Lertpitaksinchai 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Also cruising into the last eight round was seventh seed Lavinia Tananta of Indonesia despite having difficulty in the second set, she was able to beat qualifier Katherine Westbury from New Zealand 6-1, 7-6(9). Then the sole qualifier still stood tall and through into quarterfinals was German Sarah-Rebecca Sekulic. Left-handed Sekulic eased past local wild card Napatsakorn Sankaew 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles’ quarterfinals, two seeded pairs crashed out of the competition. Top seed duo Ayu Fani Damayanti/Lavinia Tananta lost easily to a better local duet Suchanun Viratprasert/Varatchaya Wongteanchai 2-6, 0-6. A defeat virus also attacked third seed pair Beatrice Gumulya/Jessy Rompies when they bowed out in such heart breaking match and lost to Tomoko Dokei/Yoo Mi (Japan/South Korea) 6-7(2), 5-7.

In the meantime, in the battle of Aussies fourth seed duet Renee Binnie/Kristina Pejkovic toughed it out to beat Hayley Ericksen/Daniela Scivetti 7-6(4), 7-5. Another tight match was the duel of wild cards as He Chun-Yan/Natchanok Saenyaukhot (China/Thailand) edged past local duo Nicha Lertpitaksinchai/Kanyapat Narattana 7-5, 6-4.
