Another seeded player bundled out in third round or round 16 at Roland Garros on Wednesday (June 3, 2009) when Peruvian qualifier Bianca Botto continued her fairytale by disposing sixth seed Croat Ajla Tomljanovic 6-1, 3-6, 7-5. In quarterfinals, Botto will challenge talented Russian Daria Gavrilova who saw-off the last Asian in third round Zarina Diyas with breezy 6-2, 6-1 victory. Meanwhile the only ITF A team member left standing was South African Chanel Simmonds who extended her winning trend as she secured her quarterfinals’ berth after beating “giant killer” Sandra Zaniewska of Poland 6-4, 6-2. In the last eight round, Simmonds will challenge ninth seed and sole local hope, Kristina Mladenovic. Mladenovic outclassed Slovenian Nastja Kolar 6-0, 6-3 in round 16.
Third seed and champion of Australian Open 2009, Ksenia Pervak came through such fierce opposition from 14th seed American Christina Mc Hale and she won 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. In quarterfinals, Pervak will clash with her compatriot Valeria Solovieva who ousted American Beatrice Capra 6-2, 6-4 in third round.
In doubles’ second round or round 16, two seeded pairs were shocked as they bowed out to their opponents. Fifth seed duo Veronica Cepede Royg/Camila Silva (Paraguay/Chile) lost to Aussie duet Isabella Holland/Olivia Rogowska 2-6, 2-6, then eighth seed pair Christina Mc Hale/Sloane Stephens of USA bowed out to Katerina Paliivets/Chanel Simmonds (Canada/South Africa) 4-6, 2-6. Meanwhile third seed duo Timea Babos/Heather Watson (Hungary/Great Britain) dispatched Russian duet Polina Leykina/Ekatrina Nikitina 6-3, 6-2. Also moving into the last eight round, duo Ksenia Kirillova/Martina Trevisan (Russia/Italy) who edged past local duet Nathalie Mohn/Gracia Radovanovic 6-3, 6-2.
