Berta denies France's clean sweep

Unseeded Daniel Berta of Sweden continued his impressive performance as he captured Roland Garros title on Sunday (June 7, 2009). 16 years old Berta from Helsingborg edged past local player and 11th seed Gianni Mina 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. En route to final, Berta defeated 9th seed Facundo Arguello of Argentina in the opening round and his previous biggest triumph was as winner at Manila Grade 1 in late March, 2009. Berta became the fourth Swede to win the boys' title, following the achievements of Mats Wilander (1981), Stefan Edberg (1983) and Kent Carlsson (1984).

In girls' final, ninth seed Kristina Mladenovic made the local fans happy as she cruised past Russian Daria Gavrilova 6-3, 6-2. Mladenovic did not lose a set all week and she became the seventh French girl in the modern era to claim the title.

On Saturday (June 6, 2009) Croatia’s duet Marin Draganja and Dino Marcan, and the Romanian/Thai combination of Elena Bogdan and Noppawan Lertcheewakarn experienced glory at the French Open as they won their respective junior doubles titles.

Draganja and Marcan grabbed the boys’ title with an impressive 6-3, 6-2 win over fourth seeds Guilherme Clezar of Brazil and Liang-Chi Huang from Chinese Taipei.

Draganja and Marcan became the first all-Croatian pair to win the boys' title in Roland Garros after such strong action.

Second seeds Bogdan and Lertcheewakarn battled past Timea Babos of Hungary and Briton Heather Watson, the No. 3 seeds, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 to take the girls' trophy.

The victory gave Bogdan her first grand-slam title while for world champion Lertcheewakarn it was her second, after her US Open doubles triumph last September.
