Tananta romps into semi-final

The current number one of Indonesia, Lavinia Tananta booked her place in semi-final at "Women's Circuit 3" tournament which is held in Hatyai, Songkhla, Thailand on Thursday (July 15, 2010).

In today's quarterfinal, third seed Tananta edged past Russian qualifier Natela Dzalamidze 6-2, 6-4. Today it was the second meeting between Tananta and Dzalamidze. In their first meeting at Bukhara 25K, Uzbekistan in early June 2010, Tananta battled past Dzalamidze 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round.

In the last four round, Tananta will face qualifier Katherine Westbury from New Zealand who stunned Australian sixth seed Alison Bai 6-4, 6-2.

Meanwhile Austrian second seed Tina Schiechtl also cruised into semi-final after she saw-off seventh seed Magali De Lattre of Portugal 6-4, 6-0. In semi-final, Schiechtl will be challenged by local eighth seed Nudnida Luangnam who shocked Japanese fourth seed Ayaka Maekawa 6-1, 6-0.

Tananta cruises into quarterfinal, Damayanti falls

From "Women's Circuit 3" tournament with total prize money of US $ 10,000 in Hatyai, Songkhla, Thailand, singles' second round were completed today (July 14, 2010). Indonesian players third seed Lavinia Tananta and unseeded Ayu Fani Damayanti were in action but only Tananta made it to quarterfinals.

The current number one of Indonesia, Tananta battled past Chinese Taipei qualifier Juan Ting-Fei 6-2, 7-5. With this victory, Tananta is now leading 2-0 in her head to head with Juan. In their first ever meeting at Manila 10K in November 2008, Tananta came from behind to beat Juan 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Meanwhile Damayanti was defeated by local eighth seed Nudnida Luangnam 4-6, 1-6. Despite such defeat, Damayanti is still leading 3-2 in her head to head with Luangnam.

The top seed killer, young South Korean qualifier Lee So-Ra failed to keep up her winning streak as she was beaten by New Zealander who also had to go through qualifying, Katherine Westbury 4-6, 5-7.

Tananta, Damayanti earn victory, while Rompies crashes out

From the third leg of Thai Women's Circuit with total prize money of US $ 10,000 in Hatyai, Songkhla, Thailand which started on Tuesday, July 13, 2010 three Indonesians from Big Mama's camp - numero uno Lavinia Tananta, Ayu Fani Damayanti dan Jessy Rompies began their campaign.

Coming-off from a break, third seed Tananta had an easy outing as she booted out local wild card Nattawadee Kotcha 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round. Also returning to the tour after several weeks off, Damayanti posted an easy victory over South Korean Han Sung-Hee 6-1, 6-0.

Meanwhile Rompies who has been playing her third week of 10K here, bowed out to Russian qualifier Natela Dzalamidze 3-6, 3-6 in the opening round. In the first leg, Rompies grabbed her 10K maiden title in Nonthaburi then last week she finished in second round or round 16 in Pattaya.

The biggest shock was capitalized by 15 years old South Korean qualifier Lee So-Ra as she ousted Japanese top seed Shiho Akita 6-2, 4-6, 6-0.

Basuki/Date-Krumm end their journey

Former Indonesian tennis queen Yayuk Basuki and her partner Japanese Kimiko Date-Krumm failed to reach final of "2009 Dunlop World Challenge Tennis Tournament" with total prize money of US $ 75,000 which is held at indoor carpet courts in Toyota city, Aichi prefecture, Japan. On Friday (November 27, 2009) second seed duet Basuki/Date-Krumm bowed out to Thai Tamarine Tanasugarn and New Zealander Marina Erakovic 3-6, 3-6 in semi-final.

Gumulya exited in second round, Liu grabbed her maiden title

The only Indonesian player Beatrice Gumulya in the main draw at "Holcim/ITF Women's Circuit 2" which was held at Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, Manila, Philippines failed to reach quarterfinal on Thursday (November 19, 2009). In her do or die attempt of gaining more ranking points, Gumulya kept on struggling as she bowed out to her doubles partner and seventh seed Han Sung-Hee of South Korea 1-6, 2-6. Playing in her second 10K's final after Gurgaon, India last year, Han eventually bowed out to Chinese fifth seed and lefty Liu Shaozhuo 1-6, 2-6 in today's final of 19 years old girls. So, Han had to be content with this outcome again. Meanwhile Liu appeared in her first ever 10K's final and finally got her 10K's maiden title.

In doubles' final, South Korean duet Han Na-Lae/Yoo Mi eased past Czarina-Mae Arevalo/Katharina Lehnert (Philippines/Germany) 63 60.

Gumulya survives the scare at Manila 10K

The only Indonesian player Beatrice Gumulya in the main draw at "Holcim/ITF Women's Circuit 2" which is held at Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, Manila, Philippines battled through a thriller in the opening round today (November 17, 2009). In her desperate effort of adding more ranking points, Gumulya still could not find her best form as she was pushed all the way but prevailed to win over Chinese Taipei's qualifier Liu Chi-Fan 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. In round 16, Gumulya will clash with her doubles partner and seventh seed Han Sung-Hee of South Korea. In first round, Han had three sets battle but she managed to beat local qualifier Czarina-Mae Arevalo 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.

Top seed Elodie Rogge-Dietrich from France also had difficulty in her opener as she had to play a thriller and barely defeated Israeli Ofri Lankri 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Also moving into second round was second seed Lee Ye-Ra who breezed past Malaysian Jawairiah Noordin 6-1, 6-2.

Meanwhile American wild card Riza Zalameda edged past Thai Sophia Mulsap 6-3, 6-2 in first round. The only Thai secured her second round berth was eighth seed Nicha Lertpitaksinchai after she defeated her compatriot Peangthan Pliphuech 6-4, 6-3.

The only upset was the departure of Chinese sixth seed He Chun-Yan who was beaten by South Korean Han Na-Lae 6-2, 0-6, 1-6.

In doubles first round, Gumulya partnered with South Korean Han Sung-Hee again and they are top seeded. Both Gumulya and Han suffered back to back defeat to South Korean duo Han Na-Lae/Yoo Mi 1-6, 6-1, 5-10. Last week in the first leg of this tourney, duo Gumulya/Han bowed out to the same pair in semi-final.

In the last four round, 22 years old second seed Lee Ye-Ra stopped fine run of first timer in 10K semi-final, 17 years old Juan Ting-Fei of Chinese Taipei 6-2, 7-5. In the other last four round, South Korean fourth seed Yoo Mi denied 10K maiden final for 18 years old Thai eighth seed Nicha Lertpitaksinchai. Playing in her second 10K semi-final after Pattaya last June, Lertpitaksinchai bowed out to Yoo 1-6, 3-6.

In doubles semi-final today, top seed pair Beatrice Gumulya/Han Sung-Hee (Indonesia/South Korea) crashed out after they were beaten by South Korean duo Han Na-Lae/Yoo Mi 3-6, 2-6. Yesterday, duet Han/Yoo took the opening set 6-3 but then the match was abandoned. So, the two pairs resumed the battle today.

The other last four round was between third seed duo He Chun-Yan/Liu Shaozhuo from China and unseeded pair Kim Sun-Jung/Lee Ye-Ra of South Korea. Duo Kim/Lee claimed the victory after they crushed He/Liu 6-0, 6-0. In final today, Kim/Lee sealed the title as they survived a thriller over Han/Yoo 6-4, 4-6, 10-6.

Two seeds fall, duo Gumulya/Han into semi-final

On Wednesday (November 11, 2009) the remaining first round matches were staged at "Holcim/ITF Women's Circuit 1" which was held at Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, Manila, Philippines. The only shock was the exit of sixth seed He Chun-Yan from China as she bowed out to her compatriot and qualifier Zhang Nan-Nan 6-7(4), 1-6. It was only second victory of opening round in 10K main draw after Qianshan last June for 17 years old Zhang.

Two local wild cards, Riza Zalameda and veteran Maricris Fernandez-Gentz had different outcome in the opening round. Zalameda bowed out to South Korean fourth seed Yoo Mi 3-6, 1-6, while Fernandez-Gentz won her comeback outing with an easy 6-1, 6-2 victory over qualifier Yoko Naito of Japan. Fernandez-Gentz was the inaugural winner of this tourney in 1998.

30 years old Fernandez-Gentz, who last played in the country in 2002 just came out of her retirement. The women’s singles champion in the 1999 Brunei Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and she is entered in the 2009 SEA Games in Laos together with Zalameda.

In second round today (November 12, 2009) Fernandez-Gentz had to end her journey after she lost to South Korean seventh seed Han Sung-Hee 3-6 then retired due to foot injury. An upset was made by Juan Ting-Fei of Chinese Taipei as she cruised past French third seed Elodie Rogge-Dietrich 6-3, 6-1 and reached her first ever quarterfinal in 10K.

Meanwhile two South Koreans second seed Lee Ye-Ra, fourth seed Yoo Mi, then Chinese fifth seed Liu Shaozhuo and Thai eighth seed Nicha Lertpitaksinchai also continued to advance into the last eight round.

In doubles, top seed pair Beatrice Gumulya/Han Sung-Hee (Indonesia/South Korea) eased past duet He Sirui/Trang Huynh Phuong Dai (China/Vietnam) 6-2, 6-0 in quarterfinal yesterday (November 11, 2009).

Gumulya crashes out in opener again

The only Indonesian player Beatrice Gumulya here at "Holcim/ITF Women's Circuit 1" which is held at Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, Manila, Philippines fell in the opening round yesterday (November 10, 2009). In her quest of gaining more ranking points, Gumulya still struggled indeed as she bowed out to Chinese Taipei qualifier Miao Yui-Lynn 4-6, 6-1, 1-6. 17 years old unranked Miao is just playing her fifth tourney of her pro career here in metropolitan Manila. As for Gumulya, she recorded her back to back first round exit after Kuching 10K last week.

Singles main draw had to be revised since the original top seed Çagla Büyükakçay of Turkey withdrew and she replaced by German lucky loser Jessica Sabeshinskaja. On the opening day, total of 8 singles matches were staged, then the remaining 8 were scheduled to be played today.

Second seed Lee Ye-Ra from South Korea secured her opening victory after she outclassed her compatriot Kim Sun-Jung 6-3, 6-3. 22 years old Lee was once ranked as high as WTA 178 (as at September 22, 2008). No doubt, she is the strongest candidate to win this tourney.

In doubles, Gumulya had no choice but to perform well as she partnered with South Korean Han Sung-Hee. Duet Gumulya/Han is top seed and they had an easy opener after they breezed past duo Ashmitha Easwaramurthi/Tanaporn Thongsing (India/Thailand) 6-2, 6-2.

Basuki/Zalameda finish as runners-up, Chan takes singles title

Indonesian Yayuk Basuki (currently ranked at WTA 247 in doubles) and her 26 years old partner, Riza Zalameda of USA, had to be content as runners-up despite their do or die fight. In the end, Basuki/Zalameda bowed out to local top seed pair Chan Yung-Jan/Chuang Chia-Jung 3-6, 6-3, 7-10 in final of "2009 OEC Taipei Ladies Open" with total prize money of US $ 100,000 which took place at indoor hardcourts of Taipei Arena in Taipei, Taiwan today. Duet Chan/Chuang claimed their last title as a pair at WTA Tier II in Los Angeles, California in late July 2008.

Singles winner was local fourth seed Chan Yung-Jan who battled past Japanese top seed Ayumi Morita 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. Finally Chan came out of long drought since her last singles title at Xiamen, China 75K in early December 2007. Today was the fifth final between Chan against Morita in pro circuit and Chan leads 4-1 versus Morita. While in their head to head, Chan is 5-1 against Morita.

Tananta's triumph assures clean sweep for Indonesia

Top seed Lavinia Tananta claimed her 10K's fourth title at the newest tourney with total prize money of US $ 10,000 in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia after she battled past compatriot and second seed Jessy Rompies 6-1, 7-5 in final today (November 8, 2009). So 22 years old Tananta added another title after Jakarta 2006, Manila 2008 and Solo 2009. As for 19 years old Rompies, she became 10K runner-up for the very first time. In terms of head to head in international pro circuit, Tananta leads 2-0 now over Rompies. Semarang resident Tananta had victory over Rompies 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-4 in 10K quarterfinal at Nonthaburi, Thailand last August.

All Indonesians final at Kuching 10K, Tananta/Tedjakusuma grabbed the title

Top seed Lavinia Tananta and second seed Jessy Rompies will battle in final at the newest tourney with total prize money of US $ 10,000 in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia after they edged past their opponents in today's semi-finals (November 7, 2009). Top seed Tananta cruised past her senior and fourth seed Romana Tedjakusuma 6-2, 7-5. Tananta will clash with second seed Jessy Rompies who edged past South Korean seventh seed Kang Seo-Kyung 6-4, 6-3. Whoever will win in final, Indonesia is secured to have clean sweep. It will be Tananta's 7th final appearance in 10K and she will strive for her fourth title of 10K after Jakarta 2006, Manila 2008 and Solo 2009. As for Rompies, she will play her first ever 10K final here since her best outcome was being 10K's semi-finalist twice so far. Rompies's defeat in these two semi-finals were both beaten by Ayu Fani Damayanti at Manila 2008 and Jakarta 2009.

In doubles' final, top seed pair Tananta/Tedjakusuma returned to action today and they were triumphant after ousting South Korean fourth seed duet Han Sung-Hee/Kang Seo-Kyung 6-2, 7-5. It was the first title for Tananta and Tedjakusuma as a pair since they had partnership for the first time here. So, Tananta is adding her 4th doubles title of 10K this week after Muzaffarnagar, India in 2006 with Singaporean Lee Wei-Ping; Tarakan, Indonesia in 2007 with compatriot Vivien Silfany Tony and Manila, the Philippines in 2008 with camp fellow Jessy Rompies.

Teaming-up with Filipino descent Zalameda (doubles rank at WTA 96) for the first time, duo Basuki/Zalameda surprised second seed pair Chan Chin-Wei/Yan Zi (Chinese Taipei/China) 6-4, 6-2 in today's semi-final (November 7, 2009). In final, Basuki/Zalameda will challenge top seed duet Chan Yung-Jan/Chuang Chia-Jung (Chinese Taipei). Chan/Chuang were runners-up at Aussie Open and US Open both in 2007, here at their home soil they decided to reunite as doubles pair after they played together last time at US Open 2008. In the other semi-final, Chan/Chuang defeated Oksana Kalashnikova/Alexandra Panova (Georgia/Russia) 6-4, 6-1.

Tananta, Rompies, Tedjakusuma into quarterfinals

After getting bye in the opening round, top seed Lavinia Tananta, second seed Jessy Rompies and fourth seed "veteran" Romana Tedjakusuma cruised into quarterfinals at the newest tourney with total prize money of US $ 10,000 in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia today (November 5, 2009). Top seed Tananta posted an easy victory over South Korean qualifier Kim Jung-Eun 6-1, 6-1, followed by second seed Jessy Rompies who came back from a set down to beat Belgian Gally De Wael 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-4 and also fourth seed "veteran" Romana Tedjakusuma booked her spot in the last eight round after she edged past Malaysian Jawairiah Noordin 6-3, 7-5.

The only shock of today was the exit of eighth seed Shivika Burman from India as she was defeated by South Korean Han Sung-Hee with interesting scoreline 2-6, 6-2, 2-6.

In doubles' quarterfinals, top seed pair Tananta/Tedjakusuma breezed past duet Gally De Wael/Asmitha Easwaramurthi (Belgium/India) 6-3, 6-0 while second seed duo Beatrice Gumulya/Jessy Rompies eased past South Korean pair Kim Jung-Eun/You Ju-Hee 6-1, 6-2.

Gumulya keps struggling at the newest Kuching 10K

Beatrice Gumulya tasted another defeat in the opening round at the newest tourney with total prize money of US $ 10,000 in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia on Wednesday (November 3, 2009). Younger sister of Sandy Gumulya, Bea as she likes to be called, was crushed by South Korean seventh seed Kang Seo-Kyung 1-6, 1-6. Till now, Gumulya has been playing total of 13 tournaments since late April 2009 including a couple of 25Ks in East Kalimantan with best results as quarterfinalist twice and both in Nonthaburi 10K last August. So as of today, Gumulya is 8-12 (including qualifying rounds) and since she exited immediately, she earned only US $ 98.

Meanwhile, top seed Lavinia Tananta, second seed Jessy Rompies and fourth seed "veteran" Romana Tedjakusuma received bye as two seeded players crashed out instantly in first round. Fifth seed Elodie Rogge-Dietrich from France could not survive a thriller and she lost to Vietnamese Trang Huynh Phuong Dai 1-6, 6-3, 4-6. Also becoming casualty was sixth seed Kumari-Sweta Solanki of India who was booted out by South Korean qualifier Han Na-Lae 2-6, 1-6.

Kiwi's rising star: Sacha Jones

Young Auckland resident Sacha Jones has won her third ITF Pro Circuit Tournament in less than a month in Australia. On Sunday (18 October, 2009), she defeated Alicia Molik of Australia in three sets 3-6 6-1 7-5, at the final of the $25,000 tournament in Port Pirie, South Australia.

Jones was fifth seed, while Molik, who is in her comeback stage to top tennis, was a special exempt entry to the tournament. Last week, Jones also came back from a set deficit to beat Molik, to win the tournament in Mount Gambier 25K. And now Jones is 3-1 against Molik in their head to head.

Jones' 25K maiden title came in Darwin on September 27, 2009 and as at today, October 19, 2009 her world ranking is at WTA 242 and it is indeed her career high. 18 years old Jones has certainly proved that she could raise her bar higher when she finished as semi-finalist at Grapevine, Texas 50K last July. So, Kiwi fans are really looking forward to witnessing her career advancement.

Back to back deja vu for Gumulya

Sandy Gumulya of Indonesia bundled out in second round at "Nyrstar Tennis International" in Port Pirie, South Australia today (October 15, 2009). It was local wild card Bojana Bobuscic who ousted Gumulya 6-1, 6-3 and forced her to pack-up her belongings. So, same as last week in Mount Gambier 25K, former numero uno of Indonesia Gumulya stumbled in round 16. In two weeks, Gumulya bagged total of US $ 1,127 from singles and doubles. It was certainly not enough to compensate all of her expenses.

Top seed Yurika Sema from Japan continued her run as she eased past local wld card Alsion Shemon 6-0, 6-3 in second round. Also still cruising into quarterfinal was Aussie second seed Olivia Rogowska who breezed past compatriot Alenka Hubacek 6-2, 6-1.

Another shock today was claimed by local player Monika Wejnert as she fought back from a set down to defeat seventh seed Chiaki Okadaue from Japan 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. In the meantime Aussie Alicia Molik also advanced into the last eight round after she booted out local qualifier Julia Moriarty 6-1, 6-1.

Two more seeds such as Aussie fourth seed Shannon Golds and Kiwi fifth seed Sacha Jones also secured their quarterfinal berth. Golds edged past compatriot Isabella Holland 6-4, 6-2, followed by Jones who cruised past Briton qualifier Danielle Brown 6-3, 6-2.

Gumulya earns victory in opener at Port Pirie 25K

Sandy Gumulya of Indonesia continued her down under tour at "Nyrstar Tennis International" with total prize money of US $ 25,000 which is held in Port Pirie, South Australia. In the opening round, Gumulya came back from a set deficit to secure a win over Aussie Alison Bai 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 on Wednesday (October 14, 2009). In second round, she will face local wild card Bojana Bobuscic who surprised Japanese eighth seed Shiho Hisamatsu 6-2, 6-4.

Top seed Yurika Sema from Japan did not have problem to beat local qualifier Jenny Thuy Le 6-1, 6-2 in the first round. Also progressing into round 16 was Aussie second seed Olivia Rogowska who eased past qualifier Emily Fanning of New Zealand 6-1, 6-3.

Shock of the day was claimed by local wild card Hayley Ericksen who edged past Japanese third seed Erika Sema 7-6(6), 6-3 in the opening round. Another early exit was suffered by sixth seed Emily Webley-Smith of Great Britain as she was defeated by former world number 8 Alicia Molik who entered this tourney with Special Exempt. Aussie Molik cruised past the Briton 6-3, 6-2.

Meanwhile the other seeds such as Aussie fourth seed Shannon Golds, Kiwi fifth seed Sacha Jones, and Japanese seventh seed Chiaki Okadaue were also advancing into the next round.

In doubles, Gumulya continued her partnership with Aussie Julia Moriarty. Duet Gumulya/Moriarty won their opening round after they eased past local wild card pair, Deeon Mladin/Alexandra Nancarrow 6-0, 6-3. Then in quarterfinal, duo Gumulya/Moriarty bowed out to fourth seed pair Danielle Brown/Emily Webley-Smith from Great Britain 4-6, 3-6.
