Tedjakusuma surprises third seed Lee again
Déjà vu experienced by top two South Korean players, third seed Lee Jin-A and seventh seed Lee Ye-Ra in the first round at “ITF Gimhae International Women’s Circuit” with total prize money of US $ 25,000 on Wednesday (June 3, 2009). Two weeks ago at Incheon 25K, both Lees immediately crashed out in the opening round. This time again local numero uno Lee failed to claim revenge over Indonesian veteran Romana Tedjakusuma after she bowed out to Surabaya born retriever 3-6, 6-0, 4-6. So far in three series of 25K on the land of Kimchi, Tedjakusuma has been consistent into round 16. Meanwhile, local number two Lee was shocked by her compatriot and qualifier Kim Na-Ri 6-7(5), 3-6. The final surprise was the exit of eighth seed Brazilian Vivian Segnini after she was beaten by qualifier Chen Yi of Chinese Taipei 4-6, 4-6.
China’s top seed Lu Jing-Jing faced strong challenge from her compatriot, qualifier Sun Sheng-Nan 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Emulating what Lu did, it was second seed Japanese Ryoko Fuda who cruised past local qualifier Kim Hae-Sung 6-3, 6-2. Meanwhile fourth seed Han Xinyun of China showed no mercy towards Zhang Ling of Hong Kong as she crushed her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Followed by sixth seed Zhou Yi-Miao of China who had tough battle before she barely won 7-6(5), 7-5 over qualifier Liu Chi-Fan from Chinese Taipei.
In doubles’ opening round, three seeded pairs had to work extra harder in defeating their opponents. Top seed duo Hwang I-Hsuan/Zhang Ling (Chinese Taipei/Hong Kong) had to earn a win in a tenacious fight over local wild card duet Hong Seung-Yeon/Yoo Mi 6-4, 5-7, 10-3. In the meantime, second seed pair Han Xinyun/Ji Chunmei of China came back from a set down to beat local wild card duo Chae Kyung-Yee/Kim Ji-Ae 3-6, 6-1, 10-2. Then third seed duet Yayuk Basuki/Romana Tedjakusuma from Indonesia faced fierce challenge from Maki Arai/Xie Yan-Ze (Japan/China) 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 10-0. Only fourth seed pair Chen Yi/Ryoko Fuda (Chinese Taipei/Japan) had less opposition from Lizaan Du Plessis/Shannon Golds (South Africa/Australia) as they managed to win 7-5, 6-3.
