Struggling Damayanti reaches quarterfinals at windy Wellington tourney

Ayu Fani Damayanti, the only Indonesian player left in the contest of final leg at “ASB Pro Circuit” in Wellington, New Zealand experienced scare again in the second round outing. This time 16 years old local wild card Katherine Westbury imposed fierce challenge towards Balinese player. Thanks to her longer hours in tour, Damayanti at last prevailed to defeat Westbury 6-2, 6-7(1), 6-3. In the quarter-finals, Damayanti will face top seed Hwang I-Hsuan of Chinese Taipei who edged past American Sabrina Capannolo 7-5, 6-1 in the other round 16 outing.

South Korean qualifier Kim So-Jung continued her run as she crushed Australian Alison Bai 6-2, 6-1 and in the last eight round, she will play against another qualifier Hao Jie from China. Hao came back from a set down to shocked seventh seed Ana-Clara Duarte of Brazil 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Another surprise snatched by qualifier Lizaan Du Plessis from South Africa after she disposed fourth seed Zhang Ling of Hong Kong with 6-3, 6-3 victory. South Korean Kim Hae-Sung will battle with Du Plessis in the quarter-finals, as Kim fought back to defeat Japanese Remi Tezuka 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. Two seeded players, second seed Montinee Tangphong of Thailand and fifth seed Chae Kyung-Yee from South Korea secured their last eight berth despite their tough encounters. Tangphong survived the scare of Australian Alenka Hubacek as pulled out 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. While Chae forced to lose the opening set and finally saved by the bell to beat recent junior grad Yang Zi-Jun of Hong Kong 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(10).

Impressive winning streaks still owned by duo Kim So-Jung/Ayaka Maekawa (Korea Selatan/Jepang) who won both tourneys in North Shore City and Hamilton, and indeed they are still unstoppable. In the semi-finals, Kim/Maekawa eased past duet Jessy Rompies/Remi Tezuka (Indonesia/Japan) 6-3, 6-3. In the other last four round match, South Korean duo Chae Kyung-Yee/Kim Hae-Sung had to earn their victory in a hard way but eventually they won over Dianne Holland/Alenka Hubacek (New Zealand/Australia) 4-6, 6-1, 10-6.
