

Hamilton 10K’s recent winner Ayu Fani Damayanti had difficulty in her opening round clash with Japanese Yuka Kuroda in the final leg of US $ 10,000 “ASB Pro Circuit” tournament held in Wellington, New Zealand. Kuroda gave the Balinese player a scare when she took the second set, however Damayanti stayed focus to beat her opponent 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. In the second round Damayanti will face local wild card and 16 years old Katherine Westbury. This local talent made an upset by ousting eighth seed Nudnida Luangnam of Thailand 6-2, 6-3.
Fourth seed Zhang Ling of Hong Kong edged past Aki Yamasoto of Japan 6-3, 6-4 in the other opening round. Another upset of the day was sealed by experienced Remi Tezuka of Japan as she cruised past sixth seed compatriot Ayaka Maekawa 6-1, 7-6(4). Aussie Alison Bai came from behind to defeat young Thai Varatchaya Wongteanchai 1-6, 7-5, 6-3. While the youngest of “Big Mama” club members, Jessy Rompies suffered early exit as she barely lost to seventh seed Ana-Clara Duarte of Brazil 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-7(4).
In doubles’ opening round matches, top seed duet Ana-Clara Duarte and Lavinia Tananta secured comfortably victory over local wild card pair, Leela Beattie/Brittany Teei 6-3, 6-3. Second seed pair Hao Jie/Zhang Ling (China/Hong Kong) forced to play close battle but they prevailed 7-6(4), 6-4 over qualifier Noppawan Lertcheewakarn/Varatchaya Wongteanchai of Thailand. Third seed Australian duo Alison Bai/Renee Binnie breezed past wild card pair Kairangi Vano/Ai Yamamoto (New Zealand/Japan) 6-2, 6-1. While fourth seed duo Montinee Tangphong/Nungnadda Wannasuk from Thailand fought back after a set deficit to win over Sophia Mulsap/Sakiko Shimizu (Thailand/Japan) 1-6, 6-3, 10-5. Unseeded pair Rompies/Tezuka had relatively easy opening round as they defeated Aussie duet Hayley Ericksen/Daniela Scivetti 6-0, 6-3.
