Tananta, Damayanti sailed into the second round in Manila 10K

Fifth seeded Lavinia Tananta and seventh seeded Ayu Fani Damayanti were among the winners in the first round at "PLDT-SMART ITF Women's Circuit" in Manila today. In the second leg tournament with total prize money of US $ 10,000 both Tananta and Damayanti joined their compatriot, 18 years old Jessy Rompies who already advanced to the second round yesterday.

Tananta faced strong challenge from experienced Cassandra Barr of Australia especially in the opening set. Barr took the first set 6-4 which involved rally exchanges from both players. Tananta regrouped herself and bounced back to seal 6-3, 6-1 victory in the two remaining sets. Barr started her pro circuit in 1999 and it was in 2006 she reached her best achievements of her career when she became runner-up at Taipei 10K and quarter-finalist at Pune 25K in India. This year she reached three of 10K's quarter-finals at Solo, Jakarta, and as far away as Petroria, South Africa. Interesting to see the fact that Gumulya sisters have stopped her. In Solo, Barr bowed out to Sandy Gumulya, while in Jakarta she lost to the eventual winner, Beatrice Gumulya.

In the second round, Semarang born Tananta will play against South Korean qualifier, Yoo Mi. In the other opening round match today, Yoo demonstrated her awesome fighting spirit and pipped China's Qiu Si-Si 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-2.

Another Indonesian in the main draw, seventh seeded Damayanti did not have much trouble in defeating local wild card, Michelle Pang 6-1, 6-3. In the second round, Damayanti will be challenged by qualifier from China, Yang Yi. In another first round match, Yang blasted local wild card and teenager, Jessica-Marie Agra 6-2, 6-2.

Other seeded players, second seeded Lu Jia-Jing of China and fourth seeded Yumi Nakano from Japan also advanced into the second round.

In doubles, fourth seeded pair Rompies/Damayanti cruised into quarter-final after they ousted Renee Binnie/Nguyen Thuy-Dung (Australia/Vietnam) 6-4, 6-1.
