Ysidora Tobing fails to reach quarterfinal


The one and only Indonesian player in the main draw of “Australian Open Junior Championships”, Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing had to end her journey in round 16 or third round on Wednesday, January 27, 2010. In her first ever participation at a major in Melbourne, Ysidora Tobing made an impressive attack by winning the opening set but then in the end she had to bow out to third seed Daria Gavrilova of Russia 6-2, 2-6, 3-6.

A day before on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 – number one junior player of Indonesia in a relatively easy outing, Ysidora Tobing breezed past 17 years old Canadian qualifier Marianne Jodoin 6-3, 6-0 in second round. In the opening set Ysidora Tobing quickly cruised to lead 4-0 and as Jodoin was able to hold her serve, she got on the board 1-4. Games accumulation became 4-2, 5-2, 5-3 and after Ysidora Tobing broke her opponent’s serve again, she ensured her first set’s win 6-3.

With no merci and it was interestingly such fast yet aggressive act by 16 years old Indonesian, Ysidora Tobing closed it out 6-0 in second set. Both players spent 65 minutes on the court and there were only 7 deuces along the match. In terms of first serve percentage, Ysidora Tobing sealed 76% while Jodoin 68%. For double faults the Indonesian player served twice, and her Canadian opponent had three.

In third round on Wednesday, Ysidora Tobing was promising in the opening set as she was able to apply her strategy well. She was in control of the battle and took the first set 6-2. Then Gavrilova, runner-up of French Open 2009 and semi-finalist at US Open 2009, bounced back with her smart move in mixing her game and did not let her Indonesian opponent to attack with her explosive shots anymore. Gavrilova rallied to lead 3-1, 3-2 and eventually she forced the Indonesian to have rubber set after she won 6-2.

In final set, Ysidora Tobing actually had a temporary lead 3-2 and since then Gavrilova regained her control to close it out 6-3. In the two previous meetings, Gavrilova won both duels against Ysidora Tobing. In second round of US Open 2009 the Indonesian prodigy lost 1-6, 6-7(3), followed with another defeat in World Group of Junior Fed Cup 2009 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico where Ysidora Tobing bowed out 2-6, 6-7(3).

With this outcome Ysidora Tobing just emulated what former world junior number 2 Angelique Widjaja did. In her first ever performance in Aussie Open 2001, Widjaja had to end her participation in third round. Last year also in Aussie Open, another Indonesian Beatrice Gumulya then already 18 years old also reached third round but she made it in her second year participation. The best result for Indonesians is still owned by former junior world ranked ITF 21 Wynne Prakusya who finished as runner-up at Melbourne Park in 1998 when she was ousted by lefty Croat Jelena Kostanic.

In doubles, duo Ysidora Tobing and her partner Kanyapat Narattana of Thailand posted a victory in the first round as they fought back to beat local wild card pair Molly Polak/Belinda Woolcock 2-6, 6-0,(11-9). In super tie-break, duo Indonesia and Thai rallied from 2-7, 4-9 all the way to win 11-9. In round 16 Ysidora Tobing/Narattana got defeated by third seed pair Tamara Curovic/Sachie Ishizu (Serbia/Japan) 3-6, 2-6.

Ysidora Tobing surprises 13th seed Curovic



The only Indonesian player at Australian Open Junior Championships, Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing passed the very first test in round 64 as she battled past 13th seed Tamara Curovic of Serbia 7-5, 7-6(6) on Sunday evening (January 24, 2010). These two players were scheduled to play at court 5 but then they had to move to court 18 since the boys' match went into rubber set at the first designated court. Along the match both Ysidora Tobing and Curovic fought in a close duel but in the end Ysidora Tobing could overcome nerves and showed better mental toughness to seal a victory in her maiden performance at Melbourne Park.

Coming to the court with protection on her stomach area, Ysidora Tobing started the opening set by breaking Curovic's serve after she went through 4 deuces. In second game, Curovic broke back immediately then they went on 2-2. Curovic continued on to lead 4-2, 5-3 as she was able to break her opponent's serve twice. Refuse to giving-up, Ysidora Tobing attacked easily to break back her tall Serb opponent and forced it to 5-5. With high confidence the Indonesian player posted a love game to take 7-5 in the first set.

With good penetration and strong attacking game, Ysidora Tobing cruised quickly to lead 5-1. Then she began to let Curovic to find her own game back and Ysidora Tobing simply just retrieved the balls as if she went on a picnic. As its consequence, Curovic earned 4 games in a row without challenge from her opponent. Then Curovic had a lead 6-5, but Ysidora Tobing fought back to level it up 6-6 with another love game. Tie-break was unavoidable then in which both players were in such topsy turvy drama.

Ysidora Tobing took temporarily lead 2-1, then Curovic took over 3-2. The Indonesian player looked solid as she went up 5-3, but the Serb fought on to tie it 5-5. Even Curovic made it 6-5 to earn a set point. This time the Indonesian player did not want to make the same costly mistake and she showed her determination to close it out 8-6. In terms of match statistics, each of both players made an ace, while Curovic served 7 double faults, as Ysidora Tobing had only 2. In terms of first serve percentage, Ysidora Tobing posted 68%, while Curovic had 57%.

In second round on Tuesday, Ysidora Tobing will face 17 years old Canadian, Marianne Jodoin. Also a first timer here at Melbourne Park, qualifier Jodoin claimed her victory over local wild card Nicole Hoynaski 6-3, 7-5.

The biggest shock was capitalized by China's Tang Hao Chen who ousted second seed Heather Watson from Great Britain 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. Winner of US Open 2009, Watson admitted that Tang played really well and she simply made many unforced errors. Meanwhile local qualifier Sophie Letcher also made an upset after she cruised past Norwegian 14th seed Ulrikke Eikeri 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. On Monday, January 25 there are 8 matches left to be completed.

Ysidora Tobing exits in round 16


Number one Indonesian junior player Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing could not play effectively on Sunday (January 17, 2010) as she got abdominal muscle strain after she played 3 hour battle yesterday. In round 16, she did everything she could but with such problem on her stomach she had limitation to serve well. She did mix her game with slices and high-bounced top spins to distract her opponent's agressive attack from the baseline but in the end she had to lose 3-6, 2-6 to sixth seed Sachie Ishizu in their first ever meeting. 17 years old Ishizu became the only Asian left in the competition at "Loy Yang Traralgon International" as 13th seed Zheng Saisai of China also bowed out to Canadian third seed and winner of "Dunlop Orange Bowl 2009" Gabriela Dabrowski. Ishizu was still fresh from winning a Grade A title at "32nd International Casablanca Junior Cup" in Mexico on January 3, 2010 and she moved up her ranking from ITF 32 to currently at ITF 7.

Meanwhile Ysidora Tobing took the advice from the doctor that she must take a few days of good rest as way to be fully recovered on time for Aussie Open on January 24th. Therefore as she got an approval from her doubles partner, Kanyapat Narattana, they gave walk over to fourth seed pair Tamara Curovic/Sachie Ishizu (Serbia/Japan).

Ysidora Tobing survives a thriller


"Ichiban" Indonesian junior player Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing posted her second win of the season after she escaped three sets thriller against almost 6 foot tall Kristyna Pliskova from the Czech Republic in second round (round 32) at "Loy Yang Traralgon Intenational" tournament on Saturday (January 16, 2010). After the two players spent 3 hours in such hot condition, Ysidora Tobing came back to defeat lefty Pliskova 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Pliskova was such a patient player, with less power in hitting the ball and hardly made unforced error. Meanwhile Ysidora Tobing did not seem in her best physical condition as she had lack of power especially in her serve. But today Ysidora Tobing improved her 1st serve percentage compare to yesterday. In the opening set, the Indonesian girl trailed 1-4 immediately as she could not apply her own strategy and became an error prone.

From then on, Ysidora Tobing woke-up and she became thirsty to earn point as she was very persistent in applying her attacking game. She bombarded Pliskova with her flat strokes just barely crossing over the net yet with good depth into the baseline. Being a tall girl, Pliskova had difficulty in returning her opponent's shots and Ysidora gradually accumulated game by game till she made it 4-4.

In second set, again Ysidora Tobing quickly trailed 0-2 but she changed her tactic by making variety of shots which forced Pliskova to run around here and there. It paid-off as Ysidora Tobing collected 5 games in a row and she took temporary lead 5-2. Then as the Indonesian girl lost her focus, Pliskova resumed to reap 2 more games till Ysidora Tobing fought back to take 6-4.

In final set, the Indonesian player was consistent in controlling the game and both players began to be worn out. A close contest was obvious by looking at the following: 0-1, 1-1, 1-2, 2-2, 2-3, 3-3, 3-4, 4-4, 5-4, 6-4 as Ysidora fought till the very end to come out as the winner.

In round 16, another tough battle for Ysidora Tobing as she will face Japanese 6th seed Sachie Ishizu, winner of Casablanca Cup Grade A in early January 2010. Ishizu did not get sweat at all to beat local wild card Sophie Letcher 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles, Ysidora Tobing partnering with Thai Kanyapat Narattana for the second time. In their first time outing as a pair last April, they became runners-up at "Asian Closed Junior Championships" an ITF Grade B1 tourney held in Indore, India. This time in first round (round 32) duo Indonesia and Thailand cruised past Vivien Juhaszova/Elina Svitolina (Slovakia/Ukraine) 6-2, 6-4. In round 16, duo Narattana/Ysidora Tobing will challenge 4th seed pair Tamara Curovic/Sachie Ishizu (Serbia/Japan).

Ysidora Tobing shocks 9th seed Zanevska


Indonesian junior numero uno Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing made a good start by winning opener at "Loy Yang Traralgon International", an ITF Grade 1 tournament which is held in Traralgon, Victoria, Australia. On Friday (January 15, 2010) unseeded Ysidora Tobing toppled ninth seed Maryna Zanevska of Ukraine 7-5, 6-1 in the opening round. Currently ranked at ITF 33 as per January 11, 2010 which is Ysidora Tobing's best rank in ITF Junior circuit, she quickly dominated world junior number 12 Zanevska in the opening set as she got comfortable lead 5-1. From then on Ysidora Tobing could not maintain her momentum to close it out as she lost her focus to let Zanevska won 4 games in a row. Luckily Ysidora Tobing regrouped herself and resumed her control of the game to take 7-5. In the second set, Ysidora Tobing was unstoppable as she kept on pressuring top student at 6th Sense Tennis Academy in Limelette, Belgium. This prestigious academy is owned by Justine Henin and her long time coach, Carlos Rodriguez. Indeed, Ysidora Tobing demonstrated her improved forehand and backhand down the line to create points and eventually she took 6-1 game, set and match.

In second round (round 32) Ysidora Tobing will face a tougher task as she will play against 17 years old qualifier Kristyna Pliskova from the Czech Republic. A left-handed player, Pliskova is unranked in junior circuit since she had not played in any tournament for almost 3 years. All these years Pliskova has been focusing on pro tour and she is now ranked at WTA 474. In the first round Pliskova posted a nice win over local wild card Storm Sanders 6-4, 6-0.

Actually there was another Indonesian player in qualifying round and it was Athena Nathalia (ranked at ITF 356) who lost to local player Stefani Stojic 5-7, 5-7 in the first round. Nathalia has been living in the land of Margaret Court for a while.

While still pursuing her junior career, Ysidora has entered Burnie's challenger in Tasmania, Australia. Currently reaching her best ranking ever at ITF 33, Ysidora will certainly play qualifying round at this 25K event which will be staged on January 31, 2010. Prior to this pro tourney, Ysidora is scheduled to play "Loy Yang Traralgon International" an ITF Grade 1 tourney in Traralgon, Victoria from January 15, 2010 then she will head to Melbourne Park for Aussie Open which will start on January 24, 2010.

No news about upcoming schedule for Tedjakusuma and younger Gumulya.
