Junior Fed Cup Final: Top seed Russia demolished Indonesia 3-0

The second Round Robin ties of the Junior Fed Cup by BNP Paribas continued at La Loma Centro Deportivo in San Luis Potosi, Mexico on Wednesday (September 30, 2009). In Group A, top seed Russia was too strong for Indonesia as the Russian girls crushed Indonesian team 3-0. Russia secured 1-0 lead after Ksenia Kirillova cruised past Cynthia Melita 6-1, 6-4. Then Daria Gavrilova won the second rubber as she battled past Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing 6-2, 7-6(3). In the final rubber, duo Daria Gavrilova/Polina Leykina edged past Indonesian pair Cynthia Melita/Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing 6-4, 6-4.

Indonesia is currently last in Group A by only winning 1 match and losing 5 matches. In third Round Robin tie, Indonesia will face Croatia and it is going to be another heavy task to do.

In Group B, Japanese girls maintain their strong performance but it has been interesting to witness that Japan's "ichiban" player and Torrance, California born Emi Mutaguchi has been playing only in doubles. It is likely based on her weak results compare to Akiko Omae, then Mutaguchi has been off-duty in singles. Today (September 30, 2009) Tokyo resident Mutaguchi turned 16 years old.

Junior Fed Cup Final: Indonesia bowed out to Argentina

The Junior Davis Cup and Junior Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Finals got underway in San Luis Potosi, Mexico on Tuesday (September 29, 2009) with the world’s best 16 and under players striving to claim victory for their nations.

The 32 qualified teams this year come from 28 different countries. Last year the USA made history, taking both the boys’ and girls’ titles. But this time the girls’ winners USA could not manage to qualify this year, so then it is opening an opportunity for a new champion to grab the trophy.

The Junior Fed Cup sets to be quite interesting this year, with many nations having excellent squads and some of the best junior girls in the world are in the showdown. After failed to qualify for last year’s Finals, the Russian girls’ team are strong candidates for this year’s title. Having finished top of the European qualifying group, and with all three players are currently within the ITF top 30 junior rankings, they will be focusing to reclaim a title Russia hasn’t won since 1997. European runners-up Slovak Republic, whose three players are all within the top 75, could be title's contenders.

Possible strong showing in the Junior Fed Cup, could be teams of Japan and China as they are both having solid teams. Japan will be aiming to claim their first Junior Fed Cup title, and will be very confident this week after a dominant performance in the final qualifying in Australia last April.

Indonesian team is comprised of Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing, Cynthia Melita and Rekyan Woro and it is the same team which made a history to advance in this week's Finals. Indonesian team is joining top seed Russia, eighth seed Argentina and Croatia in Group A. This year, Indonesian team's captain is Deddy Tedjamukti, current coach of Ysidora Tobing and former coach of Angelique "Angie" Widjaja.

On Tuesday, Indonesian team lost to Argentina 1-2. In the first rubber, Melita was defeated by Florencia Di Biasi 7-6(5), 2-6, 3-6. Then junior world ranked number 42 Ysidora Tobing failed to capitalize a victory as she was beaten by lefty Agustina Sol Eskenazi 6-3, 3-6, 4-6. In the final rubber, duo Ysidora Tobing/Melita edged past Daniela Degano/Di Biasi 6-2, 6-3. Next Indonesian girls will have a very tough task as they will face top title's contenders, Russian girls.

Dane Grage has achieved good results especially on clay from May 2009 onward such as runner-up at an ITF Grade 2 tourney known as "La Vie Sport Junior Cup La Villach 2009" in Villach, Austria, then she became winner at an ITF Grade 1 tourney called "Mediterranee Avenir" in Casablanca, Morocco. So, at this moment Grage is reaching her highest rank at ITF 41, while Ysidora Tobing is currently ranked at ITF 52 (career high at ITF 45 on June 15, 2009).

The biggest upset was the exit of fifth seed Veronica Cepede-Royg from Paraguay as she barely defeated by Canadian Elisabeh Abanda 5-7, 4-6.

Ysidora Tobing is playing here as a member of ITF A team with Hungarian Zsofia Susanyi, Veronica Cepede-Royg of Paraguay and Cristina Dinu from Romania. It is the final tourney for all ITF A team squad.

Great Britain's Watson claims US Open singles title

Eleventh seed Heather Watson of Great Britain came out triumphant and earned her first ever Junior Grand Slam singles title at "US Open Junior Tennis Championships" today (September 13, 2009). In final, 17 years Watson cruised past Russian Yana Buchina 6-4, 6-1 in 1 hour and 55 minutes. Watson recorded 4 aces and 3 double faults, while her opponent Buchina had only 1 ace and made 6 double faults.

Her biggest achievement of her junior career came as no surprise as Watson finished as runner-up at "Eddie Herr International Junior Championships 2008" and was quarterfinalist at "Australian Open Junior Championships 2009". En route to final, Watson shocked second seed Noppawan Lertcheewakarn of Thailand 6-2, 6-1 in quarterfinal and it was truly a sweet revenge since she barely lost to the Thai prodigy 4-6, 4-6 in round 32 of US Open 2008. Then in semi-final Watson outclassed ninth seed Daria Gavrilova of Russia 6-3, 6-0. Since Watson was 12 years old, she has been trained at the prestigious Nick Bollettieri Academy.

As for 17 years old Buchina, she ousted 16th seed Beatrice Capra from USA 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 in the last eight round and then she battled past another Great Britain's hope, Laura Robson 1-6, 6-3, 7-5.

In doubles final, unseeded pair Valeria Solovieva/Maryna Zanevska (Russia/Ukraine) fought back to defeat third seed duet Elena Bogdan/Noppawan Lertcheewakarn (Romania/Thailand) 1-6, 6-3, 10-7.

Second seed Lertcheewakarn survived a scare

The highest seeded player left in the draw, Thai Noppawan Lertcheewakarn booked her place in the quarterfinal of "US Open Junior Tennis Championships" after she faced a slight challenge from Norwegian Ulrikke Eikeri but she managed to win 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in round 16 on Thursday (September 10, 2009). By reaching the last eight round this time, Lertcheewakarn improved her third consecutive appearance here at Flushing Meadow after she lost to the eventual runner-up of US Open 2008, Venezuelan Gabriela Paz in round 16.

17 years old Lertcheewakarn will face 11th seed Heather Watson from Great Britain in quarterfinal. The Briton had to fight hard to beat lucky loser Annika Beck of Germany 6-4, 7-5 in third round. Meanwhile more seeded players crashed out in round 16 such as fourth seed Sloane Stephens of USA, sixth seed Silvia Njiric from Croatia, 10th seed Richel Hogenkamp of the Netherlands and 12th seed Belgian Tamaryn Hendler.

Floridian Stephens could not maintain her momentum after taking the opening set and she lost to 14th seed Slovak Jana Cepelova 6-4, 6-1, 6-0. Followed by 9th seed Russian Daria Gavrilova who barely ousted Croat Njiric 6-4, 7-6(7). Another Russian emulated her compatriot Gavrilova when Yana Buchina cruised past Dutch girl Hogenkamp 7-5, 6-0 and last but not least former Wimbledon champion in 2008, Laura Robson of Great Britain eased past Belgian Hendler 6-2, 6-1.

The two remaining tickets in the last eight round were grabbed by 16th seed American Beatrice Capra and local wild card Lauren Davis. In round 16 Capra bounced back to defeat local wld card Asia Muhammed 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, while Davis continued her run as she went the distance to beat Elena Bogdan from Romania 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.

Simply bad luck as Ysidora Tobing stumbles in singles and doubles

Since Wednesday morning Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing got blister on her foot and during practice she just could not run at all. But Ysidora Tobing kept up her strong motivation to give her best by being unreasonable against ninth seed Daria Gavrilova of Russia in second round (round 32) of "US Open Junior Tennis Championships".

The opening set went quickly as Ysidora Tobing did not run at all to chase her opponent's returns. She just stood still and retrieved Gavrilova's groundstrokes. 15 years old Russian Gavrilova cruised on to lead 4-0 then eventually the Bandung resident held her serve and it became 1-4. From this stage on, Gavrilova did not waste her time to close it out 6-1 in 20 minutes.

In second set, Ysidora Tobing took risk by simply hitting as hard as she could all Gavrilova's returns. Ysidora Tobing began with breaking Gavrilova's serve and then she held her serve to lead 2-0. The Batak girl continued to gain her lead 2-1, 3-1, 3-2 but Gavrilova fought harder to level it 3-3. Immediately Gavrilova could hold her serve and she was up 4-3 but then Ysidora Tobing also held her serve to make it 4-4. The number two junior player of Indonesia broke her opponent's serve to lead 5-4. At this moment, it was such turning point for Gavrilova after she could force it 5-5. Instantly this Russian teenager held her serve again and she earned her lead 6-5. Then it was Ysidora Tobing's turn to hold serve and she made it 6-6.

Over tie break, Gavrilova took advantage of Ysidora Tobing's inability to run and she tricked her Indonesian opponent with several dropshot winners. Gavrilova won 7-3 in tie break and secured her ticket into round 16. It took Gavrilova 51 minutes to defeat Ysidora in second set. Nevertheless, credit should be given to Ysidora who fought strongly in second set.

Ysidora Tobing claims her first ever victory in Junior Grand Slam

The only Indonesian in the main draw of "US Open Junior Tennis Championships 2009" Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing tasted her first ever victory in only her third Grand Slam appearance on Tuesday (September 8, 2009) in Flushing Meadow, New York, USA. She did not play until the third day of this tourney since her opponent Mexican Alejandra Granillo still played in the final of 10K in Celeya, Gto, Mexico on Sunday (September 6, 2009). 18 years old Granillo (born June 6, 1991) lost in this 10K final and this time in round 64 of Junior US Open, it was Ysidora Tobing's turn to beat her 6-4, 6-2 in 76 minutes.

Ysidora Tobing had played French Open and Wimbledon this past summer for the very first time and in both Grand Slams she lost in the opening round. In her opening match, Ysidora Tobing started well and forced service game till 2-2. Then Ysidora Tobing broke Granillo's serve to lead 3-2. A Bandung resident, Ysidora Tobing did not waste her time to widen the gap and advanced 4-2. But more experienced Granillo (currently ranked at ITF 111) fought back to level it 4-4. From then on Ysidora Tobing found her momentum back to break her Mexican opponent and she resumed her lead 5-4. Eventually Ysidora Tobing served for the set and she closed it out 6-4.

In second set, Indonesia's junior number two Ysidora Tobing began her duel by breaking Granillo's serve and she earned her lead all the way 2-0, 2-1, 3-1, 3-2, 4-2, 5-2 and she finished it with love game with 6-2 victory.

Last Sunday(September 6, 2009), the first day of this final Grand Slam, local wild card Asia Muhammed made a big upset as she toppled top seed Kristina Mladenovic from France 6-1, 6-4. This past summer Mladenovic, the current number one junior player in the world, has won singles title at French Open and came out as runner-up at Wimbledon. Meanwhile Muhammed is hardly playing junior circuit anymore as she is focusing more on pro circuit. Her last junior tourney was "Dunlop Orange Bowl 2008" when she lost in round 16.

Today two more seeded players had to end their stint at Flushing Meadow. First, fifth seed Ajla Tomljanovic of Croatia bowed out to Russian Yana Buchina 6-3, 2-6, 3-6. Then local seventh seed Lauren Embree crashed out after she was beaten by Briton Laura Robson 6-4, 1-6, 4-6.
