Damayanti shocks seventh seed at Quanzhou 25K

Indonesian numero uno Ayu Fani Damayanti posted a "surprise" victory over seventh seed Chiaki Okadaue of Japan 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of "China's Women's Challenger" with total prize money of US $ 25,000 in Quanzhou, China yesterday (August 12, 2009). A surprise it was simply because Okadaue a seeded player, but in terms of game, Damayanti was certainly a better player in most aspects of groundstrokes.

Playing only in her 10th tourney of the season, Damayanti extended her 16 winning streaks since Bangkok 10K last June. Out of her last 9 tourneys Damayanti has collected 5 titles from 10Ks in Hamilton, New Zealand; Bangkok and Pattaya then most recent Jakarta along with 25K at Balikpapan.

Currently at WTA 290, based on her career statistics, 22 years old and mediocre Okadaue, is now 10-16 this season and her best outcome came at Obihiro 25K, in the beautiful island of Hokkaido last July when she finished as quarterfinalist.

Rungkat/Trijati win doubles title at Iran Futures

Indonesian duo Christopher Rungkat/Sunu Wahyu Trijati took doubles title after they shocked top seed pair Alexei Filenkov/Murad Inoyatov (Russia/Uzbekistan) 6-2, 6-0 in the final of "Iran F5 Futures" with total of US $ 15,000 in prize money this past Saturday (August 8, 2009). Being held on clay courts in Tehran, Iran - duo Rungkat/Trijati posted their first round victory over duet of Marc Abdulnour/Vikram Reddy B (Syria/India) 6-0, 6-3. In quarterfinal, Rungkat/Trijati had walk over victory against third seed Indian duo Srirambalaji Narayanaswamy/Ranjit Virali-Murugesan then in semi-final they defeated another Indian pair, Vijayant Malik/Yannick Nelord 6-3, 7-5.

As Indonesia Tennis Association had miscommunication with the tournament committee, eventually only Trijati was awarded wild card in the singles main draw. In the original plan, Indonesia Tennis Association requested for Rungkat to get wild card main draw, while Trijati to receive wild card qualifying. As result, Trijati could only survive until second round as he bowed out to third seed Bogdan-Victor Leonte of Romania 3-6, 2-6. In the opening round, Trijati eased past Armenian lucky loser Khachatur Khachatryan 6-3, 6-0.

Tananta survives three sets in Solo 10K's final

Fifth seeded Lavinia Tananta claimed a sweet victory and secured only her third title of her career at "Solo Women's Open" which took place at Gelora Manahan Tennis Courts in Solo, Central Java. Semarang resident Tananta overcame second seed Varatchaya Wongteanchai of Thailand 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 in today's final. Tananta is now leading 2-0 in her meeting against Thai Wongteanchai. Her maiden title of 10K was almost three years ago in Jakarta, while her second 10K's title came in Manila last November. Will be 22 years old on November 3, 2009, Tananta as the winner pocketed $ 1,568 and earned twelve circuit points, while Wongteanchai who lost to Tananta back in Pattaya last June, as the runner-up bagged $ 980 and eight circuit points. As for Wongteanchai, today was her second 10K's final of her career after Bangkok last June when she had to be content as runner-up to Japanese Ai Yamamoto.

In semi-finals on Saturday (August 8, 2009) Tananta sealed her revenge after she disposed unseeded Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing 6-3, 6-1. Despite such score line, the match between Tananta and Ysidora Tobing was actually involved many deuces. But overall Tananta played better than her younger opponent as Ysidora Tobing admitted that she committed many unforced errors throughout the battle particularly in second set. Meanwhie Wongteanchai denied the fine run of wild card Lutfiana Aris Budiharto and edged past the student of Wichita State University in Kansas 7-5, 6-2.

In doubles' final on Saturday, second seed pair Beatrice Gumulya/Jessy Rompies grabbed their second title as pair in 10K as they breezed past third seed duo Kanyapat Narattana/Nungnadda Wannasuk from Thailand 6-2, 6-1. The first title for Gumulya/Rompies was at Tarakan last June.

A finalist is guaranteed as three local players into semi-finals

All three Indonesian players in quarterfinals today (August 7, 2009) advanced into the last four round of "Solo Women's Open" which is held at Gelora Manahan Tennis Courts in Solo, Central Java.

The first one who booked the ticket for semi-final was wild card Lutfiana Aris Budiharto. Currently a student at Wichita State University, one of Tennis Diva camp's members, Budiharto proved as better player by demonstrating her ability as consistent retriever and made her opponent, Thai qualifier Natchanok Saenyaukhot to be frustrated along the match. In the midst of her summer vacation, Budiharto crushed Saenyaukhot 6-2, 6-0. An unranked player now, 18 years old Budiharto once had reached her best at WTA 725 on August 13, 2007 and tomorrow she will appear in her fourth 10K's semi-final after Balikpapan 2005, Jakarta 2006 and Jakarta 2008.

Next Budiharto will clash with second seed Varatchaya Wongteanchai from Thailand who had an easy outing against physically worn out seventh seed Kim Ji-Young of South Korea. Wongteanchai booted out Kim 6-0, 6-1 and will play Budiharto for the very first time.

Fifth seed and also a member of the elite camp, Lavinia Tananta also continued on to the last four round after she cruised past Penang resident, Jawairiah Noordin of Malaysia 6-4, 6-2. Tomorrow it will be Tananta's second 10K's semi-final of the season after Pattaya last June. Next Tananta will face another challenge from talented Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing who defeated her in the opening round of Jakarta 10K last week.

Ysidora Tobing extended her good form as she shocked 18 years old and sixth seed Liu Shaozhuo of China 7-5, 6-2 and claimed back to back semi-final only in her fourth 10K's participation. Playing against lefty, tall, persistent with big power such Liu, in the opening set Ysidora Tobing could not apply her own game as she had difficulty to penetrate Liu's defense. As its consequence, Ysidora Tobing was trailed 1-4 but she simply did not want to give-up. She kept on fighting back and gradually she was able to close the gap 2-4, 3-4, 3-5, 4-5, 5-5. Then Ysidora Tobing held her serve to earn set point 6-5 and eventually she broke Liu's serve to close it out 7-5!

In the second set, 16 years old Ysidora Tobing played solid and smart attacking game so then she could quickly lead 4-1, 4-2, 5-2 and finally won 6-2 game set and match.

Saturday's semi-final will start with Wongteanchai against Budiharto at 1 PM on Court 8 then followed by Tananta versus Ysidora Tobing at 2.30 PM on Court 7. Last but not least, doubles' final between second seed pair Gumulya/Rompies and third seed Thai duo Narattana/Wannasuk at 3 PM on Court 8.

"Solo Women's Open" became hotter as four seeded players bowed out, while the remaining four seeds advanced into quarterfinals today (August 6, 2009) at Gelora Manahan Tennis Courts, Solo, Central Java. The biggest upset was capitalized by unseeded Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing as she toppled top seed Sandy Gumulya back to back after Jakarta 10K last week. Gumulya who made an excuse about her knee problem in the last two days, in the opening set actually she had a comfortable lead 4-2 as Ysidora Tobing did not play well and hit number of unforced errors. But then 16 years old Ysidora Tobing fought back in applying her attacking game by dictating Gumulya with various crossing groundies. In the end, Ysidora Tobing claimed the first set 6-4.

In the second set, Ysidora Tobing cruised on to lead 4-0 then 4-1, 4-2, 5-2 and finally she closed the match 6-2! So now Ysidora Tobing is leading 2-0 in her head to head with Gumulya on international pro circuit.

The virus of shock continued on after Malaysian Jawairiah Noordin cruised past fourth seed Thai Nungnadda Wannasuk 7-6(6), 6-3. Last but not least, Thai qualifier surprised eighth seed He Chun-Yan from China 6-4, 6-2 to earn 10K's quarterfinal back to back.

On the other hand, the other four seeded players still moved on to the last eight round tomorrow. Second seed Varatchaya Wongteanchai of Thailand eased past Vietnamese Nguyen Thuy-Dung 6-1, 6-2, followed by local fifth seed Lavinia Tananta who defeated unfit Sophia Mulsap of Thailand 7-5, 6-0.

Meanwhile sixth seed Liu Shaozhuo of China survived a thriller after she managed to beat Thai Kanyapat Narattana 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-4. Then seventh seed South Korean Kim Ji-Young battled past Beatrice Gumulya 7-6(3), 6-3.

In doubles' semi-finals, second seed pair Beatrice Gumulya/Jessy Rompies consoled their bitter defeat as they saw-off fourth seed duo Lavinia Tananta/Grace Sari Ysidora 6-3, 6-3. In the final, duet Gumulya/Rompies will clash with third seed pair Kanyapat Narattana/Nungnadda Wannasuk of Thailand. Only Tananta & Ysidora Tobing move on, while Thai players claim perfect outcome

Two neighboring countries Thailand and Indonesia fielded five players each in the remaining first round at "Solo Women's Open" today (August 5, 2009) in Solo, Central Java. But Thai entourage fared better than Indonesia as all their five players cruised into the second round, while the hosting country only had two players who further advanced.

Second seed Varatchaya Wongteanchai of Thailand led the pack after she saw-off local qualifier Rekyan Woro 6-2, 6-2, followed by fourth seed Nungnadda Wannasuk who eased past local qualifier Bella Destriana 6-3, 6-0. Also emulating their compatriots were 19 years old Sophia Mulsap who ended her five consecutive losses with a victory over 28 years old Japanese qualifier Tomoko Taira 6-4, 7-5. In the first set, Ysidora Tobing was challenged by persistent Kang and she was behind 4-5 till she managed to regroup herself and took 7-5. Rusty episode of top seed Gumulya continues

Playing only in her 2nd tourney after having hiatus of slightly over 4 months due to right knee injury, top seed Sandy Gumulya still showed her topsy turvy game in her opening round at "Solo Women's Open" today (August 4, 2009) in Solo, Central Java. For two weeks in a row, Gumulya had to face local wild card yet hard hitter Nadia Frederika. In the first set, Frederika played relatively well as she hit her shots into the baseline and it certainly paid-off to trouble former Indonesia's numero uno. Eventually Frederika claimed the opening set 6-4. Then Gumulya bounced back and quickly cruised on to lead 5-0 as Frederika made spray of unforced errors. It was a sigh relief for gold medalist of SEA Games 2007 after she closed it out 6-1 and forced it into third set. Frederika did not seem to be able to control her own game and she was trapped into her opponent's game with committing more unforced errors all the way. Finally, Gumulya took the final set 6-1.

Number three seed Jessy Rompies faced stiff challenge only in the opening set but she played much better in the second set to seal 6-4, 6-1 victory over local wild card Cynthia Melita. While sixth seed yet tall and lefty Chinese Liu Shaozhuo posted an easy win over Thai Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul 6-1, 6-1 in the first round.

Also advancing into the second round was seventh seed Kim Ji-Young of South Korea who had to fight hard in the first set but then she had easier task as her 15 years old opponent and local wild card, Nadia Ravita, worn out physically. Kim edged past Ravita 7-5, 6-1. In the meantime, eighth seed China's He Chun-Yan had to work harder in defeating her doubles' partner, Juan Ting-Fei from Chinese Taipei. With her tenacity, in the end He fought back to win 2-6, 6-0, 6-3.

The only local wild card who moved into the next round was Lutfiana Aris Budiharto. A member of Big Mama's camp but she is now studying at Wichita State University in the land of Jennifer Capriati and today Budiharto did not have much problem to beat Indian Harshini Reddy 6-0, 6-3. A sweet victory was also earned by another Big Mama's girl, Beatrice Gumulya after she cruised past talented Thai Nicha "Eve" Lertpitaksinchai 6-3, 6-2. Such victory was indeed important to younger Gumulya as up to today's match her win lose record for the season was 3-7.

Shock of the day was made by duo He Chun-Yan/Juan Ting-Fei (China/Chinese Taipei) as they toppled top seed pair Sophia Mulsap/Varatchaya Wongteanchai (Thailand) 7-6(5), 2-6, 10-7 in the first round.

Top seed Gumulya experiences deja vu draw at Solo 10K

After Jakarta, the next stop is "Solo Women's Open" with total prize money of US $ 10,000 and it is being held at Gelora Manahan, Solo, Central Java - hometown of former top 80s Wynne Prakusya. Out of 8 qualifiers, only three Indonesians made it into the main draw which will be starting on Tuesday, August 4, 2009.

With the withdrawal of Ayu Fani Damayanti a couple days prior to withdrawal deadline, automatically erratic Sandy Gumulya is the top seed here in the cultural city of Solo. Damayanti is apparently going through final training as she is heading to play Quanzhou 25K in China from August 10, 2009.

Gumulya has same draw as last week in Jakarta since she will face local wild card and hard hitter Nadia Frederika in the first round. It will be interesting to watch whether Frederika will impose challenge or thriller again as she did before. Thai Varatchaya Wongteanchai is placed as second seed and she has an easy draw in the opening round since she is to face local qualifier Rekyan Woro.

Third seed Jessy Rompies will begin her campaign to earn her maiden title here and will play against local wild card and hard hitter Cynthia Melita. In their last meeting at "Cigna Open 2009" Rompies won over Melita in three sets. Meanwhile fourth seed Nungnadda Wannasuk from Thailand will have a relatively easy outing against local qualifier Bella Destriana.

Fifth seed Lavinia Tananta will try to regain her composure after last week's bitter loss to Ysidora Tobing and this time she will clash with local qualifier Laili Rahmawati Ulfa. Lefty sixth seed Liu Shaozhuo is drawn to meet Thai Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul.

Seventh seed South Korean Kim Ji-Young will be challenged by 15 years old local wild card Nadia Ravita in the first round and then eighth seed China's He Chun-Yan will be tested by Juan Ting-Fei of Chinese Taipei.

Two other unseeded local players, struggling Beatrice Gumulya will face talented Thai Nicha Lertpitaksinchai, while up and coming Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing will play against South Korean qualifier Kang You-Jin. Both Gumulya and Ysidora Tobing had no history of playing their opponents before.

Kang You-Jin made a breakthrough here as she made it into the main draw. Last week in Jakarta, she became qualifier but she did not play at all as she got bye in qualifying. Since August 18, 2008 till May 31, 2009 Kang played 11 tourneys of 10K and 25K and she kept losing in the qualifying round.

Damayanti denies Ysidora Tobing's 10K maiden title

The singles final of Jakarta Women's Circuit today (August 1, 2009) did not start on time since the tourney organizer was still busy putting-up a welcoming banner near the court. It was such a shame to witness such unorganized work as the banner should have been up from the very first day. It was supposed to be an international tourney but the overall organization was indeed lack of professionalism. Shame on Pelti or Indonesia Tennis Association!

Top seed Ayu Fani Damayanti as the final hope of Big Mama's camp had a slight scare despite her eventual victory over unseeded and a rookie finalist Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing. In the end Damayanti edged past Ysidora Tobing 6-4, 6-4. What a sigh relief for Martina Widjaja - big boss of the elite camp or "stepmother" of Indonesian tennis as she watched almost the entire match.

Ysidora Tobing began the opening set with holding her serve 1-0. She demonstrated her typical attacking game with explosive depth and flat groundstrokes and she managed to have comfortable 3-1 lead. Then Ysidora Tobing started to be inconsistent in maintaining her attacking game and so Damayanti was able to lead 4-3 then 5-3. The supporters of Ysidora Tobing smelled a hope after their fave player could closer the gap 4-5. Eventually Damayanti was slightly better in executing her game plan and closed it out 6-4.

In second set, Damayanti was quickly up 2-0 but her younger opponent leveled it up 2-2. Damayanti fought back to lead 3-2 then it went on 3-3, 3-4, 4-4, 5-4 and finally 6-4 after Ysidora Tobing's backhand went out.

Along the match it was obvious that Damayanti did not like her opponent's flat and explosive depth groundstrokes. So the Balinese girl tried as much as possible to avoid hitting her backhand and instead she hit forehand. Nevertheless, Damayanti's backhand was mediocre.
