Top seed Ferguson claims Quanzhou title


Top seed Sophie Ferguson from Australia sealed her title at "China Women's Challenger" in Quanzhou, China after she defeated qualifier Chan Yung-Jan of Chinese Taipei 6-3, 6-1 in the final on Sunday, August 16, 2009. Both players have met in the final of Melbourne 25K in 2006, but back then Chan was the winner with 6-3, 7-6(4) victory. So, now Ferguson is collecting two titles in 25K after Obihiro, Japan back in 2007.

In quarterfinal, Ferguson cruised past Indonesia's Ayu Fani Damayanti 6-3, 6-3 then in semi-final she ousted local fourth seed Zhang Shuai 6-3, 6-4. Zhang in the last eight round battled past resurgent South Korean Kim So-Jung 7-5, 6-2, while local qualifier Ji Chun-Mei edged past another local qualifier Qiu Si-Si 6-2, 5-0 retired. As for Chan, who is ranked at WTA 116 as per August 10, 2009 - she dispatched local second seed Lu Jing-Jing 6-4, 6-2 then she managed to escape from a scare after she won 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 over Ji Chun-Mei in semi-final.
