Two neighboring countries Thailand and Indonesia fielded five players each in the remaining first round at "Solo Women's Open" today (August 5, 2009) in Solo, Central Java. But Thai entourage fared better than Indonesia as all their five players cruised into the second round, while the hosting country only had two players who further advanced.
Second seed Varatchaya Wongteanchai of Thailand led the pack after she saw-off local qualifier Rekyan Woro 6-2, 6-2, followed by fourth seed Nungnadda Wannasuk who eased past local qualifier Bella Destriana 6-3, 6-0. Also emulating their compatriots were 19 years old Sophia Mulsap who ended her five consecutive losses with a victory over 28 years old Japanese qualifier Tomoko Taira 6-4, 7-5. Then Kanyapat Narattana who breezed past Chinese qualifier Zhou Ya 6-2, 6-1 and such impressive win was claimed by qualifier Natchanok Saenyaukhot after she crushed South Korean Kim Joohyoung 6-0, 6-1.
Fifth seed Lavinia Tananta had relatively easy match as she battled past local qualifier Laili Rahmawati Ulfa 6-3, 6-3 and joined also by her doubles partner, Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing who defeated South Korean qualifier Kang You-Jin 7-5, 6-3 despite her inconsistent game. In the first set, Ysidora Tobing was challenged by persistent Kang and she was behind 4-5 till she managed to regroup herself and took 7-5. In the second set, Ysidora Tobing did not waste her time to quickly lead 3-0, and kept on her momentum to widen the gap 3-1, 4-1, 4-2, 4-3, 5-3 and eventually she closed it out 6-3.
The only Malaysian in main draw, Jawairiah Noordin booked her place in round 16 after she ousted Chinese qualifier Pang Yang 6-2, 6-0. In doubles, three Indonesian duets moved into semi-finals.
