"Solo Women's Open" became hotter as four seeded players bowed out, while the remaining four seeds advanced into quarterfinals today (August 6, 2009) at Gelora Manahan Tennis Courts, Solo, Central Java. The biggest upset was capitalized by unseeded Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing as she toppled top seed Sandy Gumulya back to back after Jakarta 10K last week. Gumulya who made an excuse about her knee problem in the last two days, in the opening set actually she had a comfortable lead 4-2 as Ysidora Tobing did not play well and hit number of unforced errors. But then 16 years old Ysidora Tobing fought back in applying her attacking game by dictating Gumulya with various crossing groundies. In the end, Ysidora Tobing claimed the first set 6-4.
In the second set, Ysidora Tobing cruised on to lead 4-0 then 4-1, 4-2, 5-2 and finally she closed the match 6-2! So now Ysidora Tobing is leading 2-0 in her head to head with Gumulya on international pro circuit.
Another shock was made by local wild card Lutfiana Aris Budiharto who ousted her fellow from M-y W-ay camp, third seed Jessy Rompies 6-3, 7-5. The virus of shock continued on after Malaysian Jawairiah Noordin cruised past fourth seed Thai Nungnadda Wannasuk 7-6(6), 6-3. Last but not least, Thai qualifier surprised eighth seed He Chun-Yan from China 6-4, 6-2 to earn 10K's quarterfinal back to back.
On the other hand, the other four seeded players still moved on to the last eight round tomorrow. Second seed Varatchaya Wongteanchai of Thailand eased past Vietnamese Nguyen Thuy-Dung 6-1, 6-2, followed by local fifth seed Lavinia Tananta who defeated unfit Sophia Mulsap of Thailand 7-5, 6-0.
Meanwhile sixth seed Liu Shaozhuo of China survived a thriller after she managed to beat Thai Kanyapat Narattana 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-4. Then seventh seed South Korean Kim Ji-Young battled past Beatrice Gumulya 7-6(3), 6-3.
In doubles' semi-finals, second seed pair Beatrice Gumulya/Jessy Rompies consoled their bitter defeat as they saw-off fourth seed duo Lavinia Tananta/Grace Sari Ysidora 6-3, 6-3. In the final, duet Gumulya/Rompies will clash with third seed pair Kanyapat Narattana/Nungnadda Wannasuk of Thailand. Duo Narattana/Wannasuk edged past local pair Lutfiana Aris Budiharto/Laili Rahmawati Ulfa 6-2, 7-6(5).
