Rusty episode of top seed Gumulya continues

Playing only in her 2nd tourney after having hiatus of slightly over 4 months due to right knee injury, top seed Sandy Gumulya still showed her topsy turvy game in her opening round at "Solo Women's Open" today (August 4, 2009) in Solo, Central Java. For two weeks in a row, Gumulya had to face local wild card yet hard hitter Nadia Frederika. In the first set, Frederika played relatively well as she hit her shots into the baseline and it certainly paid-off to trouble former Indonesia's numero uno. Eventually Frederika claimed the opening set 6-4. Then Gumulya bounced back and quickly cruised on to lead 5-0 as Frederika made spray of unforced errors. It was a sigh relief for gold medalist of SEA Games 2007 after she closed it out 6-1 and forced it into third set. Frederika did not seem to be able to control her own game and she was trapped into her opponent's game with committing more unforced errors all the way. Finally, Gumulya took the final set 6-1.

Number three seed Jessy Rompies faced stiff challenge only in the opening set but she played much better in the second set to seal 6-4, 6-1 victory over local wild card Cynthia Melita. While sixth seed yet tall and lefty Chinese Liu Shaozhuo posted an easy win over Thai Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul 6-1, 6-1 in the first round.

Also advancing into the second round was seventh seed Kim Ji-Young of South Korea who had to fight hard in the first set but then she had easier task as her 15 years old opponent and local wild card, Nadia Ravita, worn out physically. Kim edged past Ravita 7-5, 6-1. In the meantime, eighth seed China's He Chun-Yan had to work harder in defeating her doubles' partner, Juan Ting-Fei from Chinese Taipei. With her tenacity, in the end He fought back to win 2-6, 6-0, 6-3.

The only local wild card who moved into the next round was Lutfiana Aris Budiharto. A member of Big Mama's camp but she is now studying at Wichita State University in the land of Jennifer Capriati and today Budiharto did not have much problem to beat Indian Harshini Reddy 6-0, 6-3. A sweet victory was also earned by another Big Mama's girl, Beatrice Gumulya after she cruised past talented Thai Nicha "Eve" Lertpitaksinchai 6-3, 6-2. Such victory was indeed important to younger Gumulya as up to today's match her win lose record for the season was 3-7.

Shock of the day was made by duo He Chun-Yan/Juan Ting-Fei (China/Chinese Taipei) as they toppled top seed pair Sophia Mulsap/Varatchaya Wongteanchai (Thailand) 7-6(5), 2-6, 10-7 in the first round.
