The biggest shock of the day was claimed by Indonesian Lavinia Tananta as she gunned down Aussie top seed Shannon Golds 6-3, 6-3 in the first round at "Northern Territory Women's Tennis International 2" in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia today (September 22, 2009). In second round, Tananta will face Japanese veteran Remi Tezuka who booted out Aussie Emelyn Starr 6-0, 6-1.
Aussie second seed Marija Mirkovic posted a win after she edged past Japanese Chinami Ogi 6-3, 7-5 in the opening round. Meanwhile Indonesian fifth seed Ayu Fani Damayanti came back from a set down and cruised past New Yorker Jennifer Elie 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 to advance into round 16. Also through into the next round was sixth seed Sacha Jones of New Zealand who crushed local wild card Julia Moriarty 6-0, 6-0. While Aussie eighth seed Isabella Holland battled past American Katie Ruckert 6-1, 6-4.
In doubles' first round, a surprise was made by duo Sacha Jones/Marija Mirkovic (New Zealand/Australia) when they toppled top seed pair Natsumi Hamamura/Remi Tezuka of Japan 7-5, 6-7(5), 10-6. The virus of defeat also attacked second seed duet and fourth seed duo. Local second seed pair Shannon Golds/Emelyn Starr bowed out to their compatriots, Isabella Holland/Sally Peers 2-6, 5-7, while American fourth seed pair Jennifer Elie/Katie Ruckert lost to local duet Nancy Ferguson/Alison Shemon 4-6, 5-7.
The only seeded pair survived was third seed Ayu Fani Damayanti/Lavinia Tananta who fought hard to beat local wild card pair Bojana Bobuscic/Alicia Molik 4-6, 6-3, 11-9.
