The highest seeded player left in the draw, Thai Noppawan Lertcheewakarn booked her place in the quarterfinal of "US Open Junior Tennis Championships" after she faced a slight challenge from Norwegian Ulrikke Eikeri but she managed to win 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in round 16 on Thursday (September 10, 2009). By reaching the last eight round this time, Lertcheewakarn improved her third consecutive appearance here at Flushing Meadow after she lost to the eventual runner-up of US Open 2008, Venezuelan Gabriela Paz in round 16.
17 years old Lertcheewakarn will face 11th seed Heather Watson from Great Britain in quarterfinal. The Briton had to fight hard to beat lucky loser Annika Beck of Germany 6-4, 7-5 in third round. Meanwhile more seeded players crashed out in round 16 such as fourth seed Sloane Stephens of USA, sixth seed Silvia Njiric from Croatia, 10th seed Richel Hogenkamp of the Netherlands and 12th seed Belgian Tamaryn Hendler.
Floridian Stephens could not maintain her momentum after taking the opening set and she lost to 14th seed Slovak Jana Cepelova 6-4, 6-1, 6-0. Followed by 9th seed Russian Daria Gavrilova who barely ousted Croat Njiric 6-4, 7-6(7). Another Russian emulated her compatriot Gavrilova when Yana Buchina cruised past Dutch girl Hogenkamp 7-5, 6-0 and last but not least former Wimbledon champion in 2008, Laura Robson of Great Britain eased past Belgian Hendler 6-2, 6-1.
The two remaining tickets in the last eight round were grabbed by 16th seed American Beatrice Capra and local wild card Lauren Davis. In round 16 Capra bounced back to defeat local wld card Asia Muhammed 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, while Davis continued her run as she went the distance to beat Elena Bogdan from Romania 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.
