Damayanti struggles but through, while Molik returns with a convincing win
Fourth seed Ayu Fani Damayanti was rusty in her opening round as she faced fierce opposition from local player Alison Bai at "Northern Territory Women's Tennis International 1" in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia today (September 16, 2009). Damayanti's relatively weak serve though it could be tricky sometimes was highly anticipated by Bai especially the Balinese second serve. In the end, Indonesia's number one battled past 19 years old Canberra resident Bai 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
In second round, Damayanti will face another local player, Daniela Scivetti who also had three setter but she prevailed to beat qualifier Danielle Brown from Great Britain 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Former world number 8, Aussie Alicia Molik tasted her first victory in her come back after over a year and she did not have much problem to defeat sixth seed Emily Webley-Smith of Great Britain 6-1, 6-2. In second round Molik will clash with younger compatriot Isabella Holland who eased past German Sarah-Rebecca Sekulic 6-0, 6-3 yesterday.
Top seed Aussie Olivia Rogowska had an easy win over her compatriot Emelyn Starr 6-3, 6-0 in the opening round. Rogowska recently imposed a scare towards top seed Dinara Safina in the first round of US Open. Melbourne born Rogowska forced Safina into three sets.
Again in doubles' quarterfinal, third seed duet Damayanti/Tananta had to go into deciding super tie break and eventually they edged past Danielle Brown/Emily Webley-Smith of Great Britain 6-2, 2-6, 10-4. In semi-final Indonesian duo will play against local second seed pair Tyra Calderwood/Olivia Rogowska. Calderwood/Rogowska also had to work hard to beat their compatriots, Alison Bai/Bojana Bobuscic 7-5, 4-6, 10-3.
