Tedjakusuma wins opener in Goyang
32 years old Romana Tedjakusuma claimed a good start in her opening round at "ITF Nong Hyup International Women's Circuit" in Goyang, South Korea on Wednesday (May 27, 2009). Veteran Tedjakusuma played with her vast experience and sound strategy in downing Russian qualifier Eugeniya Pashkova 6-0, 6-3. In the second round Surabaya born Tedjakusuma will challenge 14 years younger and recent winner of Incheon 25K, Han Xinyun from the land of Yao Ming. Sixth seed Han sealed comfortable triumph over American Lena Litvak 6-2, 6-3 and continued her winning streak.
Third seed Elena Chalova of Russia faced stiff opposition from local player Chae Kyung-Yee but she managed to barely clinched her close battle with 7-5 7-6(4). Also through into round 16 was seventh seed Hwang I-Hsuan of Chinese Taipei who fought off resurgent local qualifier, Kim So-Jung in grueling match but Hwang walked away with 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 victory. Meanwhile eighth seed talented Chinese Zhou Yi-Miao battled past Thai qualifier Nungnadda "Jib" Wannasuk 6-3, 6-4.
Two local players were winners in the first round today such as Lee Ye-Ra who edged past Chinese qualifier Ji Chun-Mei 6-1, 6-3, followed by wild card Kim Kun-Hee cruised past younger sister of Chen Ti, qualifier Chen Yi from Chinese Taipei 6-4, 6-1. So these two added up to total five local hopes into the next round.
In doubles, almost hundred percent of quarterfinals' matches were so tight. The Indonesian veterans of Yayuk Basuki/Romana Tedjakusuma bounced back and regrouped to beat second seed pair Chen Yi/Ayaka Maekawa (Chinese Taipei/Japan) 3-6, 7-6(6), 10-6.
