Tedjakusuma upsets local numero uno Lee
Surabaya born Romana Tedjakusuma claimed her opening round victory at “ITF Incheon Women’s Challenger Tennis” in Incheon, South Korea on Wednesday (May 20, 2009) as she ousted South Korea’s numero uno and second seed Lee Jin-A 6-3, 6-2. It was indeed nice improvement for Tedjakusuma after back to back first round losses at Balikpapan and Tanjung Selor 25K. As for 24 years old Lee, it was clear that she could not maintain her form after she won the title at Gimcheon 25K in early May. Tedjakusuma was simply showing her patience and persistency in defeating her 9 years younger opponent. Another upset was the early departure of number two South Korean and fifth seed Lee Ye-Ra as she was beaten by China’s Liang Chen 3-6, 6-3, 1-6. So, these completed two shocks of the day in the main draw.
Meanwhile top seed Lu Jing-Jing of China edged past Thai Nudnida “June” Luangnam 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round. Also advancing into second round was third seed Ryoko Fuda from Japan but she had to work harder before she prevailed to win over local qualifier Kim Na-Ri 4-6, 6-0, 7-5. Fuda’s compatriot, fourth seed Chiaki Okadaue also through into the next round after she cruised past local wild card Kim Ji-Young 6-1, 6-4.
Despite such early exit by two top South Korean players, the local quartet secured their spot in the next round as they earned victories in the first round. Local qualifier, resurgent Kim So-Jung defeated recent winner of Tanjung Selor 25K, Slovenian Tadeja Majeric 6-2, 6-3, followed by Chae Kyung-Yee who sealed a win over American Lena Litvak 6-2, 6-1, also another qualifier Kim Kun-Hee was triumphant in the battle of qualifiers as she edged past Australian Monika Wejnert 6-4, 6-1. Again another local qualifier Chang Kyung-Mi (KOR) claimed victory but in a hard way in ousting Vivian Segnini of Brazil 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. In second round, 27 years old Chang will battle with Tedjakusuma.
Placed as third seed, duo Yayuk Basuki/Romana Tedjakusuma continued their saga in the backyard of so many Lees as they had slight problem in the opening set but then managed to win over local duet, Chang Kyung-Mi/Lee Jin-A 7-5, 6-1 in quarterfinals. It was Tedjakusuma's double punches indeed over Lee after her singles' win. In semi-finals the veterans’ combo Basuki/Tedjakusuma will clash with top seed pair, Lu Jing-Jing/Sun Sheng-Nan from China. In the last eight round, duo Lu/Sun cruised past Japanese duo Ryoko Fuda/Ayaka Maekawa 6-1, 6-4.
