Tedjakusuma falls together with five seeded players
California resident Romana Tedjakusuma could not capitalize another victory as she bowed out to local qualifier Chang Kyung-Mi 4-6, 1-6 in the second round of “ITF Incheon Women’s Challenger Tennis” in Incheon, South Korea on Thursday (May 21, 2009). Chang, together with her three compatriots, qualifier yet resurgent Kim So-Jung, Chae Kyung-Yee and another qualifier Kim Kun-Hee, maintain local fans’ hope by reaching quarterfinals while more seeded players fell and only eight seed Han Xinyun of China left standing.
The biggest upset came when Naomi Cavaday of Great Britain ousted top seed Lu Jing-Jing from China despite an opening set deficit. Cavaday bounced back to win 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-2 over Lu. Resurgent Kim So-Jung also shocked third seed Ryoko Fuda of Japan after she edged past talented Fuda 6-4, 6-3. More surprises created by local players when qualifier Kim Kun-Hee cruised past fourth seed Japanese Chiaki Okadaue 6-3, 6-3 and eventually Chae Kyung-Yee completed “South Korean terminators” campaign as she fought hard in a tight match and edged past seventh seed Hwang I-Hsuan from Chinese Taipei with 7-5, 6-7(3), 6-2 victory.
Another surprise was made by “special exempt” Elena Chalova of Russia who battled past sixth seed Chinese fighter, Zhou Yi-Miao 6-2, 7-6(1). The only seeded player still survived, eighth seed Han Xinyun of China who had an easy “picnic” as she crushed Turkish Pemra Ozgen 6-1, 6-0. Meanwhile Han’s compatriot, Liang Chen extended her run into the last eight round after she was barely defeated Japanese Ayaka Maekawa 7-6(6), 6-4.
