Luangnam sees-off local hope Rompies to reach her first 25K final
Resurgent Nudnida "June" Luangnam of Thailand tarnished last local hope's chance into final as she bounced back to beat wild card Jessy Rompies 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the semi-finals of "Bulungan Regent Women's Open 2009" held today (May 16, 2009) at Bulungan Tennis Indoor Complex in Tanjung Selor, East Kalimantan. It will be the first ever final of 25K for SEA Games 2007's silver medalist, while Rompies had to be satisfied with her first appearance in the semi-finals of 25K. In the quarter-finals on Friday (May 15, 2009) currently ranked at WTA 542, Luangnam shocked fifth seed Naomi Cavaday from Kent, Great Britain with 6-4, 6-1 victory. As for Rompies, she had to go through a tough outing against Chinese qualifier Yang Yi but she prevailed to earn victory over Yang 7-5, 6-7(0), 6-2.
In tomorrow's grand finals, Luangnam will challenge the only seeded player left until today, eighth seed Slovenian Tadeja Majeric. In the last four round, Majeric eased past Japanese Erika Sema 6-2, 6-1. On Friday's quarterfinals, Majeric survived a thriller and won over Chinese qualifier Hao Jie 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. Meanwhile Sema stopped such fine run of 16 years old qualifier and lefty Sarah-Rebecca Sekulic from Germany with comfortable 6-2, 6-2 victory. 18 years old Majeric same as her opponent Luangnam, will play her first 25K final and at the same time will try to claim her maiden title in 25K tourney tomorrow.
In the meantime, on Friday evening's doubles finals, Ayu Fani Damayanti/Lavinia Tananta grabbed the title after they breezed past their juniors Beatrice Gumulya/Jessy Rompies 6-1, 6-1. It was the first title in 25K for both Damayanti and Tananta.
