Sharapova moves into semi-finals at Barbados Grade 4

Unseeded Daria Sharapova of Belarus moved into semi-finals together with two other 13 and 14 years old competitors, Americans Denise Starr and qualifier Nadia Echeverria Alam at "Barbados Junior International Championships" at National Tennis Center in St. Michael, Barbados last Friday. Sharapova fared better than quarterfinals after she ousted sixth seed Frizzi Bschorer from Germany 6-1, 6-3. In the last four round, she was scheduled to play American Starr who defeated another American Olga Khmylev in thrilling 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-4. Awesome run still secured by qualifier Echeverria Alam who edged past seventh seed Canadian Lauren Chypyha 7-5, 6-3. The only seed survived in quarterfinals was eighth seed Adel Arshavskaya of Russia who will be the oldest in the semi-finals despite being 15 years old. Arshavskaya gunned down second seed Gaia Sanesi from Italy 6-3, 6-1 in the last eight round and she will meet American Echeverria Alam next for a spot in the final. By reaching the last four round, she got closer to emulate her twin sister's achievement, Renata Arshavskaya who was runner-up at "Jalisco Junior Cup 2009" in Mexico last February.

Eighth seed Arshavskaya has been trained by former ATP player Harold Solomon of USA and her highest result was attained when as qualifier she finished in quarterfinals at the prestigious Grade 4 tourney known as "Evert American ITF Junior Circuit" last November. En route to the last eight round, she defeated Japanese prodigy Emi Mutaguchi 7-6(4), 6-1 and Floridian Jade Frampton 6-2, 6-4 before she bowed out to American Grace Min 4-6, 2-6. All in all, it should be an interesting battle as these four girls will perform in their maiden semi-finals of Grade 4.
