Former top 60s Widjaja returns

Once reaching WTA 55 on March 31, 2003, former Indonesian number one Angelique Widjaja plans to swing her racquet again. She was practically out of the tour since November 2006 and since then she played only doubles in few tourneys. In early August 2008 Widjaja or known as Angie partnered with Liza Andriyani and they grabbed a title at Jakarta 10K. Last year she resumed her singles only in a local tourney and she managed to perform at "Garuda Indonesia Tennis Masters" but she was eliminated in round-robin qualifying.

Based on the information from Indonesia Tennis Association, Angie has entered Balikpapan 25K, Tarakan 10K and Tanjung Selor 25K all to be held in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Main draw of Balikpapan 25K will start on April 28, 2009 and the two remaining tourneys will follow consecutively afterwards. As warm-up, Angie will play a local tourney, 1st leg of Sportama which will begin on April 21, 2009 at Rasuna Tennis Complex in Jakarta.

During her young and short career, Angie as wild card won her maiden WTA title at "Wismilak International 2001" in Bali then she added another singles title at "Pattaya Open 2002". Angie is still recorded as player who won her debut tour event and lowest-ranked player to win a tour singles title (at WTA 579). She also got two doubles titles in Bol 2002 with Tathiana Garbin and Bali 2003 with Maria Vento-Kabchi. While in her junior career, she won Junior Wimbledon 2001 and Junior French Open 2002 for singles. In doubles with Gisela Dulko, she claimed another title at Aussie Open 2002.

After a year of hiatus due to knee injury in the whole 2005 season, starting from scratch with no ranking in early 2006, she managed to play 9 WTA tourneys and 7 challengers then she reclaimed her numero uno in Indonesia along with being member of Fed Cup team once again. As of November 19, 2006 she finished at WTA 228.

Some of Angie's fans commented that this time they do not expect much from her, they just simply happy to see her back. So, how far can she go? Angie has the answers for sure. Welcome back Angie, in a truly ferocious competition!
