Ysidora Tobing shocks 9th seed Zanevska

Indonesian junior numero uno Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing made a good start by winning opener at "Loy Yang Traralgon International", an ITF Grade 1 tournament which is held in Traralgon, Victoria, Australia. On Friday (January 15, 2010) unseeded Ysidora Tobing toppled ninth seed Maryna Zanevska of Ukraine 7-5, 6-1 in the opening round. Currently ranked at ITF 33 as per January 11, 2010 which is Ysidora Tobing's best rank in ITF Junior circuit, she quickly dominated world junior number 12 Zanevska in the opening set as she got comfortable lead 5-1. From then on Ysidora Tobing could not maintain her momentum to close it out as she lost her focus to let Zanevska won 4 games in a row. Luckily Ysidora Tobing regrouped herself and resumed her control of the game to take 7-5. In the second set, Ysidora Tobing was unstoppable as she kept on pressuring top student at 6th Sense Tennis Academy in Limelette, Belgium. This prestigious academy is owned by Justine Henin and her long time coach, Carlos Rodriguez. Indeed, Ysidora Tobing demonstrated her improved forehand and backhand down the line to create points and eventually she took 6-1 game, set and match.

In second round (round 32) Ysidora Tobing will face a tougher task as she will play against 17 years old qualifier Kristyna Pliskova from the Czech Republic. A left-handed player, Pliskova is unranked in junior circuit since she had not played in any tournament for almost 3 years. All these years Pliskova has been focusing on pro tour and she is now ranked at WTA 474. In the first round Pliskova posted a nice win over local wild card Storm Sanders 6-4, 6-0.

Actually there was another Indonesian player in qualifying round and it was Athena Nathalia (ranked at ITF 356) who lost to local player Stefani Stojic 5-7, 5-7 in the first round. Nathalia has been living in the land of Margaret Court for a while.

While still pursuing her junior career, Ysidora has entered Burnie's challenger in Tasmania, Australia. Currently reaching her best ranking ever at ITF 33, Ysidora will certainly play qualifying round at this 25K event which will be staged on January 31, 2010. Prior to this pro tourney, Ysidora is scheduled to play "Loy Yang Traralgon International" an ITF Grade 1 tourney in Traralgon, Victoria from January 15, 2010 then she will head to Melbourne Park for Aussie Open which will start on January 24, 2010.

No news about upcoming schedule for Tedjakusuma and younger Gumulya.

The youngest Indonesian with WTA rank, Grace Sari Ysidora ends her season by reaching her highest ever world rank at WTA 757 this week. Playing only 3 pro tourneys this year, Ysidora finished in round 16 at Balikpapan 25K, as runner-up at Jakarta 10K and semi-finalist at Solo 10K. In 2008 as a "rookie" Ysidora ended-up at WTA 1053.

Silver medalist of women's singles at recent 25th SEA Games in Vientiane, Laos, Ayu Fani Damayanti posted quite good season with 5 titles from Hamilton 10K, Balikpapan 25K, Bangkok 10K, Pattaya 10K and Jakarta 10K. Damayanti earned best rank of her career at WTA 275 on October 5, 2009. Last year she ended at WTA 733.

Gold medalist of women's singles at recent 25th SEA Games in Laos, Lavinia Tananta had an improved career this year as she clinched her highest rank at WTA 362 on November 16, 2009. Tananta's ended 2008 at WTA 701. She collected 2 titles at Solo 10K and Kuching 10K this season.

Jessy Rompies also improved her outcome this year as she eventually became runner-up at Kuching 10K for the very first time. Rompies claimed her best rank at WTA 421 on November 16, 2009, while last season she closed it at WTA 811.

Sandy Gumulya had to be content with her season as she faced knee injury but she managed to finish as semi-finalist at North Shore City 10K, Jakarta 10K and Nonthaburi 10K. Gumulya lost her number one spot in Indonesia as her world ranking went down significantly. Last year she ended at WTA 252, while her highest rank was at WTA 228 on May 19, 2008.

"Veteran" Romana Tedjakusuma had mediocre season as she posted 6-11 in her singles. Last year she finished her season at WTA 372, while her best rank was at WTA 82 on April 4, 1994.

Then Beatrice Gumulya struggled throughout 2009 as she concluded her ITF Junior circuit tour in the first quarter and shifted into pro tour for the rest of the year. Her best rank was at WTA 794 on August 25, 2008 after she won her maiden title at Jakarta 10K by defeating her sister Sandy in three sets. Gumulya closed 2008 at WTA 813.

Meanwhile Sandy Gumulya is barely moved-up to WTA 608, then Romana Tedjakusuma stayed at WTA 662 same as last week. Then at the bottom is Beatrice Gumulya and she is still at WTA 885 same as previous week.

Second seed Babos out, while Zheng and Kumkhum advance into third round

Second seed Timea Babos of Hungary was shocked by local player Nicole Gibbs as she lost to Los Angeles resident 6-3, 2-6, 2-6 in second round at the prestigious Grade A tourney known as "Dunlop Orange Bowl" on Wednesday (December 9, 2009). Currently ranked at ITF 49, in pro level Gibbs is now ranked at WTA 490. Gibbs had defeated Babos also in three sets in semi-final at "Canadian Open Junior Championships" last September. In round 16, Gibbs will clash with her compatriot and wild card Robin Anderson who ousted Croat qualifier Antonela Susak 6-4, 6-3.

Another upset was made by local wild card Ellen Tsay as she toppled Croat fourth seed Silvia Njiric 6-7, 6-3, 7-5. In the next round Tsay will face Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski for a spot in quarterfinal.

Top seed Kristina Mladenovic of France moved into third round after she edged past Briton qualifier Jessica Ren 7-6(5), 6-2. Also cruising into round 16 was third seed Heather Watson who breezed past Russian qualifier Adel Arshavskaya 6-2, 6-2.

Two Asian contenders also advanced into third round. China's 13th seed Zheng Saisai continued her good form as she battled past local player Ester Goldfeld 7-691), 6-3, while Thai prodigy Luksika Kumkhum eased past Anna Orlik from Belarus 6-2, 6-2.
