Ysidora Tobing surprises Tananta - one of Big Mama's girls

Jakarta Women’s Circuit with total prize money of US $ 10,000 began its main draw today (July 28, 2009) at Kemayoran Tennis Center, Jakarta. It was sad to witness such bad condition of all hard courts at the center and for the tourney itself looked so dull since I did not see any sponsor banner at all. Apparently as it came as no surprise, no sponsor was behind of this reason and it was certainly a big question mark for Indonesia Tennis Association or known as Pelti. Then business as usual, the president of Pelti Martina Widjaja rescued the existence of Jakarta 10K by being the sole sponsor.

The biggest shock of the day was made by up and coming 16 years old Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing as she came back from a set down to topple sixth seed Lavinia Tananta 2-6, 6-3, 7-5. Both players played on court one which was designated as the center court but without scoring board. In the opening set, Tananta was simply playing well and she took an early 3-0 lead but then Ysidora Tobing fought harder to close the gap 2-3 and Tananta was unstoppable and she kept on fighting to take the first set 6-2.

In second set, currently ranked at WTA 905 Ysidora Tobing regained her composure and quickly to lead 4-1. Eventually Ysidora Tobing was able to close it out 6-3 and forced the battle into third set. Along the match both players showed their groundstroke contest combined with rallies which in the end caused Tananta to be worn out. Actually, on the break before the final set started, Ysidora Tobing asked for medical treatment as she had blister on her foot. All in all, it was not a quality match since both players made many unforced errors. Finally, Ysidora Tobing claimed her final set with 7-5 victory after 2 hours and 30 minutes.

On national level, Tananta led 3-0 in her head to head with Ysidora Tobing from “Cigna Open 2008”, “National Games 2008” and “Garuda Indonesia Masters Series 2008”. Below you may see their today’s match statistics.

In the afternoon, second seed Sandy Gumulya returned after few months away from the tour due to right knee injury. Playing against wild card Nadia Frederika, Gumulya was still rusty and she made many unforced errors. Nevertheless, Gumulya survived the scare after she managed to beat Frederika 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
