Ysidora Tobing continues her saga into final
Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing, the youngest semi-finalist and unseeded player extended her “killing battle” towards Big Mama’s elite players. Playing her first ever 10K’s semi-final at Jakarta Women’s Circuit with total prize money of US $ 10,000 today (July 31, 2009) at Kemayoran Tennis Center, Ysidora Tobing proved as a young gun and the sole threat for Big Mama’s camp.
This time was second seed Sandy Gumulya who became Ysidora Tobing’s next casualty. She won 7-6(5), 6-2. It was certainly obvious that the 16 years old player looked tense in many parts of the match and so did her senior, Gumulya. A Batak girl, Ysidora Tobing opened her campaign by holding her serve and immediately Gumulya also did the same to level it up 1-1. Then Ysidora Tobing began to spray three unforced errors including a double fault which made Gumulya to lead 2-1. More service return errors came from Ysidora Tobing’s racket and gave free points to her opponent in further advancing 3-1. Gradually Ysidora Tobing involved in rallies with Gumulya and she made it to 3-3 as she found her own game. From then on it was a close match between the two players: 3-4, 4-4, 5-4, 5-5, 6-5 until Gumulya forced it into tie break as she served an ace along with dropshot winner.
In tie break Gumulya had a lead till 4-3 then Ysidora Tobing managed to bounce back to be up 5-4, 6-5 and after a rally, Gumulya’s backhand hit the net to give the benefit forYsidora Tobing’s first set victory, 7-5.
In second set, the shift was in favor of Ysidora Tobing as she played better by scolding her opponent to keep running from side to side. She quickly took a lead 3-1, 3-2, 4-2, 5-2 and closed it out 6-2 after Gumulya’s erratic backhand turned wild. Yes, Ysidora Tobing booked her first ever 10K final’s ticket. Overall, the younger player showed mentally tougher than the older one.
Match statistics of Ysidora Tobing vs Gumulya
1st serve percentage 70% vs 70%
Ace 0 vs 1
Double Fault 4 vs 2
Winners 10 vs 9
Unforced errors 27 vs 40
Top seed Ayu Fani Damayanti did not play in her form especially in the opening set which caused her to lose 2-6 to fourth seed Jessy Rompies. It was truly a close match with many rallies involved and certainly groundstroke exchanges. Towards the end of second set, Rompies was frustrated with herself and it affected her game till the end. Indeed Damayanti fought back to win 7-5, 6-4 and earned her fourth 10K’s final of the season.
In doubles final, second seed local pair Rompies who partnered with Beatrice Gumulya failed to claim the title as they bowed out to top seed pair Nungnadda Wannasuk/Varatchaya Wongteanchai of Thailand 6-2, 6-7(4), 7-10.
