Ysidora Tobing claims her first ever victory in Junior Grand Slam

The only Indonesian in the main draw of "US Open Junior Tennis Championships 2009" Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing tasted her first ever victory in only her third Grand Slam appearance on Tuesday (September 8, 2009) in Flushing Meadow, New York, USA. She did not play until the third day of this tourney since her opponent Mexican Alejandra Granillo still played in the final of 10K in Celeya, Gto, Mexico on Sunday (September 6, 2009). 18 years old Granillo (born June 6, 1991) lost in this 10K final and this time in round 64 of Junior US Open, it was Ysidora Tobing's turn to beat her 6-4, 6-2 in 76 minutes.

Ysidora Tobing had played French Open and Wimbledon this past summer for the very first time and in both Grand Slams she lost in the opening round. In her opening match, Ysidora Tobing started well and forced service game till 2-2. Then Ysidora Tobing broke Granillo's serve to lead 3-2. A Bandung resident, Ysidora Tobing did not waste her time to widen the gap and advanced 4-2. But more experienced Granillo (currently ranked at ITF 111) fought back to level it 4-4. From then on Ysidora Tobing found her momentum back to break her Mexican opponent and she resumed her lead 5-4. Eventually Ysidora Tobing served for the set and she closed it out 6-4.

In second set, Indonesia's junior number two Ysidora Tobing began her duel by breaking Granillo's serve and she earned her lead all the way 2-0, 2-1, 3-1, 3-2, 4-2, 5-2 and she finished it with love game with 6-2 victory.

Last Sunday(September 6, 2009), the first day of this final Grand Slam, local wild card Asia Muhammed made a big upset as she toppled top seed Kristina Mladenovic from France 6-1, 6-4. This past summer Mladenovic, the current number one junior player in the world, has won singles title at French Open and came out as runner-up at Wimbledon. Meanwhile Muhammed is hardly playing junior circuit anymore as she is focusing more on pro circuit. Her last junior tourney was "Dunlop Orange Bowl 2008" when she lost in round 16.

Today two more seeded players had to end their stint at Flushing Meadow. First, fifth seed Ajla Tomljanovic of Croatia bowed out to Russian Yana Buchina 6-3, 2-6, 3-6. Then local seventh seed Lauren Embree crashed out after she was beaten by Briton Laura Robson 6-4, 1-6, 4-6.

Russian Gabueva claims her 10K's second title at Nonthaburi

20 years old Angelina Gabueva from Russia grabbed singles title of "BEC Tero Womens Circuit 6" after she edged past resurgent Yoo Mi of South Korea 6-4, 6-3 in today's final in Nonthaburi, Thailand. It is only her 10K's second titles after Guayaquil, Ecuador in 2005. Gabueva reached the highest rank of her career at WTA 433 in 2006 and is currently ranked at WTA 871 (as at August 31, 2009). While Yoo's career high rank was at WTA 317 in May 2007 but this week of August 31, 2009 she is ranked at WTA 776. Today it was Yoo's fourth final of 10K after Manila 2003 (lost to Indonesian Septi Mende) and Seogwipo, South Korea in 2005 & 2006 where she came out as winner.

In semi-final, Gabueva battled past third seed Thai Varatchaya Wongteanchai 6-4, 6-4 while Yoo sealed her revenge over sixth seed Indonesian Lavinia Tananta with 7-6(2), 6-2 victory. With such win, Yoo continued her slaughter of three Indonesians in three days.

In doubles final, second seed pair Tananta/Wongteanchai could not extend their momentum after taking the opening set 7-5 as duo Albina Khabibulina/Kanyapat Narattana (Uzbekistan/Thailand) fought back to win 6-4, 10-8 and took the title.

Tananta storms into semi-final

Sixth seed Lavinia Tananta extended her good form by reaching her 4th semi-final of 10K tourney in the last month as she fought back to defeat fourth seed Yang Zi-Jun from Hong Kong 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 in today's quarterfinal of "BEC Tero Womens Circuit 6" at Nonthaburi, Thailand. With this victory, Tananta leads 3-0 in her head to head with Yang after Jakarta 10K in 2006 and Nonthaburi 10K last year.

In the last four round, Tananta will clash with South Korean Yoo Mi who crushed qualifier Beatrice Gumulya with no mercy 6-0, 6-0. Indeed, Yoo continued her saga in slaughtering the Gumulyas back to back. It was a good revenge by Yoo since she was lost to Gumulya 2-6, 6-7(5) in qualifying round at Pattaya 10K last June.

Coming into her match against Yoo tomorrow, Tananta has secured two victories over her opponent. Tananta have won in Manila 10K last November and most recently last week in quarterfinal of Nonthaburi 10K.

Meanwhile in the quarterfinal battle of Thais, third seed Varatchaya Wongteanchai claimed her revenge over local wild card Sophia Mulsap. After a set down, Wongteanchai fought back to beat Mulsap 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. In their first meeting at Nonthaburi 10K last year, Mulsap was triumphant and won 6-3, 6-4.

Then Russian Angelina Gabueva continued her journey by defeating eighth seed Albina Khabibulina of Uzbekistan 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.

In doubles' semi-finals, second seed pair Tananta/Wongteanchai outclassed Gumulya sisters 6-1, 6-1 to book their final ticket. Unseeded duo Albina Khabibulina/Kanyapat Narattana (Uzbekistan/Thailand) surprised top seed duet Jessy Rompies/Romana Tedjakusuma from Indonesia 6-3, 6-4.

Top seed Gumulya falls at Nonthaburi 10K

Top seed Sandy Gumulya had to swallow a bitter pill as she crashed out in second round of "BEC Tero Womens Circuit 6" with total prize money of US $ 10,000 at Nonthaburi, Thailand today (September 2, 2009). This time South Korean Yoo Mi earned her revenge over Gumulya as she posted 6-1, 6-4 victory. In the first meeting between the two players at Jakarta 10K's quarterfinal in 2004, Gumulya defeated Yoo 7-6(4), 6-4.

In the first round, Gumulya had an easy outing after she breezed past local wild card Natchanok Saenyaukhot 6-2, 6-1, while Yoo survived the challenge of local qualifier Napatsakorn Sankaew 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.

Meanwhile sixth seed Lavinia Tananta continued her fine form when she eased past local hope Nicha Lertpitaksinchai 6-0, 6-3 in the opening round and today Tananta won easily over Slovenian Dalila Jakupovic 6-2, 6-2 in second round.

Qualifier Beatrice Gumulya also clinched her quarterfinal berth after she outdueled Aussie Daniela Scivetti 7-5, 6-4 in round 16. In the opening round yesterday, Gumulya survived a thriller as she edged past her compatriot and fifth seed Jessy Rompies 7-6(3), 6-7(6), 6-4.

Veteran and seventh seed Romana Tedjakusuma also crashed out in the first round as she was defeated by local wild card Sophia Mulsap 4-6, 6-1, 0-6.

The biggest shock came in the opening round when second seed Zhang Ling from Hong Kong bowed out to Russian Angelina Gabueva 4-6, 0-6.

Rungkat, Trijati crashed out immediately in the final week of Thai Futures

Indonesia's numero uno Christopher Rungkat kept on struggling to capitalize decent outcome at "Bec Tero Mens Future 3" with total prize money US $ 10,000 in Nonthaburi, Thailand last Monday (August 31, 2009). A wild card, Rungkat bowed out to seventh seed Yang Tsung-Hua from Chinese Taipei 3-6, 5-7 in the first round. Both Rungkat and Yang are 19 years old but it is obvious that Yang has been progressing a lot in his pro career than Rungkat. Yang is currently ranked at ATP 449 while Rungkat is ranked at ATP 1668. In contrast, Yang has got a title at China Futures last January, while Rungkat is still titleless.

In the meantime, Sunu Wahyu Trijati of Indonesia had to go through qualifying round first. Trijati tasted another first round defeat after he lost to fourth seed Hiroki Kondo of Japan 3-6, 1-6.

In doubles, Rungkat's bread and butter in pro, again he is partnered with Balinese Ketut Nesa Arta and the Indonesian duo sealed a win over local wild card pair Phassawit Burapharitta/Kong Pop Lertchai 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round.

Ysidora Tobing exited instantly in the land of Maple Leaf

Still fighting with jetlag after traveling more than a day, the only Indonesian Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing suffered a defeat in the first round (draw 64) of "Canada Open Junor Championships 2009" at Larochelle Park's Tennis Courts, in Repentigny, Quebec, Canada last Sunday (August 30, 2009). In this ITF Grade 1 tourney, Ysidora Tobing, a member of ITF A team bowed out to local wild card Elizabeth Abanda 4-6, 3-6.

Three other ITF A team members also experienced the same defeat as Ysidora Tobing. After getting first round bye, sixth seed Hungarian Zsofia Susanyi; 12th seed Veronica Cepede-Royg of Paraguay and 13th seed Cristina Dinu of Romania, they all crashed out in second round. Susanyi lost to American Sachia Vickery 4-6, 6-7(5). While Cepede-Royg lost to Japanese Risa Ozaki 1-6, 4-6 and then Dinu was defeated by Thai Luksika Kumkhum 6-1, 5-7, 3-6. Kumkhum had no jetlag problem since she had arrived in the US a while back ago and she had played Grade 2 tourney in New Jersey together with Ozaki.

Top seed Noppawan Lertcheewakarn from Thailand cruised on to round 16 after she battled past local qualifier Jessica Pegula 7-6(5), 6-4. Pegula is coming from a very rich family in Texas and she has been trained at ITA in Delray Beach, Florida.

In doubles, duo Susanyi/Ysidora was placed as fourth seed and they received first round bye (draw 32) then yesterday in second round, with the fact Susanyi had injury, she could not play optimally to have such team work with Ysidora. As result, Susanyi/Ysidora bowed out easily to Eugenie Bouchard/Grace Min (Canada/USA) 2-6, 0-6.

A shock was made by unseeded pair Gabriela Dabrowski/Paula Ormaechea (Canada/Argentina) as they edged past top seed duet Timea Babos/Miyabi Inoue (Hungary/Japan) 6-3, 4-6, 10-7.
