Ysidora Tobing fails to reach quarterfinal

The one and only Indonesian player in the main draw of “Australian Open Junior Championships”, Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing had to end her journey in round 16 or third round on Wednesday, January 27, 2010. In her first ever participation at a major in Melbourne, Ysidora Tobing made an impressive attack by winning the opening set but then in the end she had to bow out to third seed Daria Gavrilova of Russia 6-2, 2-6, 3-6.

A day before on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 – number one junior player of Indonesia in a relatively easy outing, Ysidora Tobing breezed past 17 years old Canadian qualifier Marianne Jodoin 6-3, 6-0 in second round. In the opening set Ysidora Tobing quickly cruised to lead 4-0 and as Jodoin was able to hold her serve, she got on the board 1-4. Games accumulation became 4-2, 5-2, 5-3 and after Ysidora Tobing broke her opponent’s serve again, she ensured her first set’s win 6-3.

With no merci and it was interestingly such fast yet aggressive act by 16 years old Indonesian, Ysidora Tobing closed it out 6-0 in second set. Both players spent 65 minutes on the court and there were only 7 deuces along the match. In terms of first serve percentage, Ysidora Tobing sealed 76% while Jodoin 68%. For double faults the Indonesian player served twice, and her Canadian opponent had three.

In third round on Wednesday, Ysidora Tobing was promising in the opening set as she was able to apply her strategy well. She was in control of the battle and took the first set 6-2. Then Gavrilova, runner-up of French Open 2009 and semi-finalist at US Open 2009, bounced back with her smart move in mixing her game and did not let her Indonesian opponent to attack with her explosive shots anymore. Gavrilova rallied to lead 3-1, 3-2 and eventually she forced the Indonesian to have rubber set after she won 6-2.

In final set, Ysidora Tobing actually had a temporary lead 3-2 and since then Gavrilova regained her control to close it out 6-3. In the two previous meetings, Gavrilova won both duels against Ysidora Tobing. In second round of US Open 2009 the Indonesian prodigy lost 1-6, 6-7(3), followed with another defeat in World Group of Junior Fed Cup 2009 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico where Ysidora Tobing bowed out 2-6, 6-7(3).

With this outcome Ysidora Tobing just emulated what former world junior number 2 Angelique Widjaja did. In her first ever performance in Aussie Open 2001, Widjaja had to end her participation in third round. Last year also in Aussie Open, another Indonesian Beatrice Gumulya then already 18 years old also reached third round but she made it in her second year participation. The best result for Indonesians is still owned by former junior world ranked ITF 21 Wynne Prakusya who finished as runner-up at Melbourne Park in 1998 when she was ousted by lefty Croat Jelena Kostanic.

In doubles, duo Ysidora Tobing and her partner Kanyapat Narattana of Thailand posted a victory in the first round as they fought back to beat local wild card pair Molly Polak/Belinda Woolcock 2-6, 6-0,(11-9). In super tie-break, duo Indonesia and Thai rallied from 2-7, 4-9 all the way to win 11-9. In round 16 Ysidora Tobing/Narattana got defeated by third seed pair Tamara Curovic/Sachie Ishizu (Serbia/Japan) 3-6, 2-6.
