Ysidora Tobing surprises 13th seed Curovic
The only Indonesian player at Australian Open Junior Championships, Grace Sari Ysidora Tobing passed the very first test in round 64 as she battled past 13th seed Tamara Curovic of Serbia 7-5, 7-6(6) on Sunday evening (January 24, 2010). These two players were scheduled to play at court 5 but then they had to move to court 18 since the boys' match went into rubber set at the first designated court. Along the match both Ysidora Tobing and Curovic fought in a close duel but in the end Ysidora Tobing could overcome nerves and showed better mental toughness to seal a victory in her maiden performance at Melbourne Park.
Coming to the court with protection on her stomach area, Ysidora Tobing started the opening set by breaking Curovic's serve after she went through 4 deuces. In second game, Curovic broke back immediately then they went on 2-2. Curovic continued on to lead 4-2, 5-3 as she was able to break her opponent's serve twice. Refuse to giving-up, Ysidora Tobing attacked easily to break back her tall Serb opponent and forced it to 5-5. With high confidence the Indonesian player posted a love game to take 7-5 in the first set.
With good penetration and strong attacking game, Ysidora Tobing cruised quickly to lead 5-1. Then she began to let Curovic to find her own game back and Ysidora Tobing simply just retrieved the balls as if she went on a picnic. As its consequence, Curovic earned 4 games in a row without challenge from her opponent. Then Curovic had a lead 6-5, but Ysidora Tobing fought back to level it up 6-6 with another love game. Tie-break was unavoidable then in which both players were in such topsy turvy drama.
Ysidora Tobing took temporarily lead 2-1, then Curovic took over 3-2. The Indonesian player looked solid as she went up 5-3, but the Serb fought on to tie it 5-5. Even Curovic made it 6-5 to earn a set point. This time the Indonesian player did not want to make the same costly mistake and she showed her determination to close it out 8-6. In terms of match statistics, each of both players made an ace, while Curovic served 7 double faults, as Ysidora Tobing had only 2. In terms of first serve percentage, Ysidora Tobing posted 68%, while Curovic had 57%.
In second round on Tuesday, Ysidora Tobing will face 17 years old Canadian, Marianne Jodoin. Also a first timer here at Melbourne Park, qualifier Jodoin claimed her victory over local wild card Nicole Hoynaski 6-3, 7-5.
The biggest shock was capitalized by China's Tang Hao Chen who ousted second seed Heather Watson from Great Britain 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. Winner of US Open 2009, Watson admitted that Tang played really well and she simply made many unforced errors. Meanwhile local qualifier Sophie Letcher also made an upset after she cruised past Norwegian 14th seed Ulrikke Eikeri 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. On Monday, January 25 there are 8 matches left to be completed.
