Two Indian girls, fifth seed Kyra Shroff and unseeded Ashvarya Shrivastava had to go extra miles before they prevailed as winners in today's second round of "Indonesia International Junior Championships" at rusty Kemayoran Tennis Center, Jakarta. Shroff faced local hard hitter Cynthia "tomboy" Melita but eventually the Indian girl won the battle 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Meanwhile, Shrivastava fought back to earn victory over tall Chan Hao-Ching of Chinese Taipei 6-7(1), 6-4, 6-3. Shrivastava recently posted her best performance in ITF Grade 2 tourney when she reached semi-final at Delhi last January.
Top seed Beatrice Gumulya faced slight difficulty in ousting Yang Zhaoxuan of China before she completed 6-4, 6-4 victory. Fourth seed Natchanok Saenyaukhot of Thailand had an easy task when she crushed local Bella Destriana 6-1, 6-0. New Zealander and sixth seed Katherine Westbury also advanced into the last eight round after she dispacthed Chinese qualifier Zhu Ai Wen 6-1, 6-1. Eight seed Juan Ting-Fei still managed to move into quarter-final as she defeated Yang Zi of China 6-3, 6-4. Other unseeded players also secured their places in the quarter-final. "Tomboy" yet "Chinese Great Wall" Zheng Sai Sai continued her run by disposing local wild card Aldila Sutjiadi 6-1, 6-2, then another local "tomboy" Laili Rahmawati Ulfa surprised herself to keep local fans' hope with top seed Gumulya after she barely outclassed tough duel with hard hitter Floridian Jade Frampton 7-5, 6-4.
In boys' singles, two first round delayed matches were concluded this morning. In the battle of qualifiers, Nuttanon Kadchapanan of Thailand edged past Bandung resident Michael Christian Tjuatjadarma 7-6(5), 7-5. Then local qualifier Gusti Jayakusuma cruised past his Thai opponent, Phaninthon Pakpoomkamol in three grueling sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Some notable second round results: top seed Hsieh Cheng-Peng denied the challenge of his Indian opponent, Sai Kartik Nakireddi 7-6(2), 6-0. Hsieh's compatriot and second seed Huang Liang-Chi of Chinese Taipei also defeated Indian Christopher Marquis quite easily 6-1, 6-2. Third seed German Dominik Schulz had an easy work by winning 6-1, 6-1 over Justin Chak-T To of Hong Kong. Fourth seed Maximilian Neuchrist of Austria also won easily over lucky loser Genki Hosoya of Japan 6-1, 6-0. Last but not least, the only local player left and eight seed David Agung Susanto improved his performance here at Jakarta Grade 2 after he outclassed Indian player, Naveen Saai 7-6(3), 6-3. With this victory, Susanto set his best record in reaching Grade 2 quarter-final for the very first time. His best performance in his career came when he finished as quarter-finalist at "Balikpapan International Junior Championships", an ITF Grade B1 tourney last November.

Three seeds crashed out instantly including local fave Ysidora
The highest ITF Junior tourney in Indonesia, an ITF Grade 2 category which is now entitled "Indonesia International Junior Championships" witnessed the falls of girls' three seeds. The first casualty was second seed Monika Tumova of Czech Republic after she was stunned by better performance of Indian Ashvarya Shrivastava. Shrivastava posted 6-3, 6-2 victory over Tumova. Then third seed Thai Kanyapat Narattana barely lost to local Laili Rahmawati Ulfa in the battle of "tomboys". Rahmawati Ulfa imposed persistency by utilizing her complete groundstrokes towards Narattana and sealed 6-4, 7-5 to move into the second round.
The biggest disappointment came from local darling and seventh seed Grace Sari Ysidora who played under pressure along the match. Her opponent, top seed in qualifying round Zheng Sai Sai showed her tenacity as the real "Chinese Great Wall" and proved her intelligent capacity as the biggest threat for everyone. Despite her young junior career and only playing in her fifth tourneys here, Zheng demonstrated solid tennis skills such as backhand slice, forehand, good serve including tricky second serve. Indeed, she still needs to improve her volley and backhand. Zheng simply chased every ball augmented with her ability to change pace and power. Meanwhile Ysidora made number of speculative shots which caused her defeat in the end. It was certainly bad luck for Ysidora as she made threepeat here at Jakarta Grade 2 as first round finisher three years in a row. The battle between these two players was witnessed by good number of spectators in the center court as the two contenders showed many long rallies during the match. For the first time the tourney committee decided to have no umpire and linesmen until quarter-finals. Indonesian junior players are very spoiled to play matches with umpire to say the least all these years. Few times Zheng argued her opponent's points as she thought the balls were out. Whether intentionally done or not, Zheng also ran to her chair to have quick drink while the game was still on. She eventually got time violation warning from the match supervisor due to taking longer time to wipe her face with towel. Nevertheless, credit should be given to Zheng who played better than Ysidora.
Zheng eventually saw off Ysidora 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(1). Number two Indonesian junior player, Ysidora made very expensive mistake when she double faulted twice in a row during tie break. Ysidora looked tense when Zheng leveled-up to 5-5 after she already took the lead 5-3 and just a game away to close the match. Match statistics: Zheng - 79% first serve percentage, 73 unforced errors, 23 winners; Ysidora - 70% first serve percentage, 1 ace, 9 double faults, 83 unforced errors, 16 winners. After all, with so many errors from both players, it was indeed not a quality match. Both Zheng and Ysidora had to endure for more than 3 hours under such scorching sun.
Last year, at Solo ITF Grade 4 tourney Zheng threatened top seed Beatrice Gumulya when she pushed Gumulya 6-2, 6-7(6), 4-6. In the final set, Gumulya already led 5-0 but Zheng managed to earn 4 games in a row and eventually she barely lost 4-6.
Other notable results, top seed Gumulya did not have trouble to win over lefty Kobkanok Upapong of Thailand 6-3, 6-1. In the battle of local wild cards, talented Aldila Sutjiadi had to fight hard to eliminate her friend, Dina Karina 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Younger sister of Chan Yung-Jan, Chan Hao-Ching sealed victory over Chinese qualifier Zhang Yuxuan 6-3, 6-3. Samantha Stosur like Floridian Jade Frampton came from behind to beat younger sister of Hsieh Su-Wei, Hsieh Shu-Ying 0-6, 6-2, 6-3.
In boys' singles, top seed and younger brother of Hsieh Su-Wei, Hsieh Cheng-Peng took his first round campaign over Adirek Khundarnpinitvon of Thailand 6-2, 7-6(5). Local hope David Agung Susanto, eighth seed here earned his spot in the second round after he dispatched Thai Chanon Varapongsittikul 6-3, 6-3. Younger brother of Tara Iyer, Venkat Iyer lost to third seed Dominik Schulz of Germany 3-6, 6-7(3). According to the father, Mr Iyer, his son has been sidelined for 18 months due to injury. Slightly fewer than in girls' side, two seeds also stumbled immediately. Irish fifth seed Samuel Barry bowed out to Canadian Zachary White 2-6, 6-7(2), while sixth seed Dino Dell'Orto from Hong Kong bowed out Egyptian Ahmed Al Bitar 6-3, 4-6, 0-2 retired.
It is such a shame to see Kemayoran Tennis Center in a very bad condition as the venue of this tourney. The President of Indonesia Tennis Association or known as "tennis diva" Martina Widjaja is owner of this tennis complex. The reason why this tourney has been held here all these years, it was indeed very simple. What else? It is to cut the cost for renting all of the tennis courts. Back in 2006, I came here intentionally to check the venue's condition and it was worst but now Kemayoran Tennis Center definitely needed another major renovation. In its current condition, Kemayoran Tennis Center is certainly a bad public relation for Indonesia as a hosting country for players from different countries.

Three local boys and four Chinese girls into main draw
Qualifying finals for boys' and girls' singles of "Indonesia International Junior Championships" were completed today (March 2, 2009) at Kemayoran Tennis Center, Jakarta. The local boys made perfect result or 100% outcome as all the three players cruised into the main draw of this ITF Grade 2 tourney. Eighth seed Jeremy Ryan Alexander managed to handle the opening set scare and eventually he dispatched top seed Kong Pop Lertchai of Thailand 7-6(6), 6-1. Second seed and Bandung resident, Michael Tjuatjadarma crushed fifth seed Andrew Bennet from Australia 6-1, 6-0. Sixth seed Gusti Jayakusuma edged past fourth seed New Zealander Ryoma Sloane 6-3, 6-4. The only unseeded player from Thailand, Nuttanon Kadchanapan defeated third seed Japanese Genki Hosoya 6-3, 6-2.
Meanwhile the four local girls left in the final qualifying all bowed out to Chinese girls. Top seed Zheng Sai Sai had an easy match and won over eighth seed Voni Darlina 6-0, 6-2. Darlina did not play with strong determination she used to demonstrate. She just simply played, instead of she played to win. Slim Darlina did not show her fighting spirit at all. Second seed Zhang Yuxuan also had relatively easy match when she defeated seventh seed Vannesa Gunawan also 6-0, 6-2. Sixth seed Zhu Ai Wen had to work hard before she secured her victory over fourth seed Rani Fitriya Wardhani 6-4, 6-4. Wardhani could have won the match against mediocre Zhu, but Rani wasted so many opportunities especially in critical points. If Wardhani could have taken the second set, the final result would have been different. Last but not least, fifth seed Dong Xiaorong survived the challenge of third seed Nadya Syarifah to earn 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory. Syarifah was simply dominant in the opening set and was leading 5-2 until Dong found her own game back to level-up at 5 all. Finally, Syarifah managed to close it out 7-5. In the two remaining sets, Syarifah tried her best to challenge her opponent but most of the time she became tentative and she let Dong to be in control of the battle.

Only seven local players in the qualifying final at Jakarta ITF Grade 2
"Indonesia International Junior Championships" was officially started with qualifying rounds for both boys' and girls' singles. Only playing in his second ITF sanctioned tourney after ITF Grade 4 in Solo last November, 13 years old Jess David Alexander, the youngest of Alexander brothers showed his determination and good fight against 15 years old Daniel Manoah Yosua. In the opening qualifying round, Alexander passed his first hurdle with 6-4, 7-5 victory over Yosua. Then in qualifying second round, Alexander bowed out to fourth seed Ryoma Sloane from New Zealand 3-6, 1-6. Sloane just turned 16 years old yesterday (February 28, 2009).
In girls' singles, the only three sets' match in the qualifying first round was between Jean Valeria of Central Java and Cynthia Wibawa from Jakarta. A "tomboy" and small Valeria had difficulty in the opening set as Wibawa imposed fierce challenge and forced her opponent into tie break but eventually Valeria closed it out 7-6(1). Wibawa fired back and took the second set 6-2. A one handed backhand player, Valeria resumed her own game and won the final set easily 6-1.
Top seed in the qualifying round, Zheng "tomboy" Sai Sai of China, winner of ITF Grade 4 tourney in Surabaya last November, received Q1 bye. In Q2 Zheng won double bagels over exhausted Valeria. Fresh from being runner-up at ITF Grade 5 tourney in Hong Kong last January, Zheng did not need to utilize all her capacity along the match. In terms of statistics, Zheng posted 66% first serve percentage, 1 ace, 7 winners and 8 unforced errors. While Valeria had 54% first serve percentage, 8 double faults, 1 winner, 23 unforced errors. In their first meeting in Surabaya last November, Zheng crushed Valeria also 6-0, 6-0.

Careless Indonesia Tennis Association continued
Indonesia Tennis Association has been maintaining its notorious reputation in terms of administration. The problem persists as result of official's negligence or the staff's lack of professionalism. As an experienced human resources consultant, I am deeply concerned with the lack of "service excellence" inside the bureaucracy of Indonesia Tennis Association. What I have been witnessing all these many years within the organization is truly "perfect mirror" of Indonesia as a nation, but in a small setting.
Personally I received the official entry list of "Indonesia International Junior Championships" - an ITF Grade 2 tourney which began today at Kemayoran Tennis Center, in the nation capital of endless traffic jam. As per February 19, 2009 when I got it, particularly entry list of girls' singles there was no name of Monika Tumova and Denisa Allertova, and both no accident were from the Czech Republic. As I have written in my previous article on this tourney, I wrote the top eight seeds based on what I have obtained from Indonesia Tennis Association.
I was shocked as I read the most updated girls' singles entry list at the venue today and indeed what a surprise to notice two names of Tumova and Allertova in it. So then I asked for further explanation from Tournament Director, Johannes Susanto. Susanto, Head of Tournament Section within the association told me that one of the incumbents misplaced the entry form from the Czech players' coach. Thus, the two girls were not listed in the original entry list.
Since I have known the two girls' coach so I did not waste my time to cross check with Jiri Waters. Waters is a familiar name for many avid tennis fans in Indonesia. He made a great deal of contribution in developing Yayuk Basuki into the world stage back in early 1990s. A friendly Waters showed me the entry forms and he added that he sent them twice by facsimile to the association by assuring me the actual dates. "Deja vu" for Waters with "same old" Indonesia when he arrived in Jakarta and then he immediately paid a visit to meet "the incumbent" for the purpose of clarification. The problem was instantly solved for sure along with apology from "the incumbent".
Here, the most updated seedings: (1) Beatrice Gumulya (INA), (2) Monika Tumova (CZE), (3) Kanyapat Narattana (THA), (4) Natchanok Saenyaukhot (THA), (5) Kyra Shroff (IND), (6) Katherine Westbury (NZL), (7) Grace Sari Ysiodra (INA) and (8) Juan Ting-Fei (TPE).
Same mistake occured at both ITF Grade 4 tourneys in Surabaya and Solo last November. Anaeve Pain from New Caledonia experienced "surprise welcome" when she found out her name was not listed as participant at both events. In Surabaya, Pain's problem was eventually solved and she was given a wild card along with fourth seed spot. So, what is new with Indonesia Tennis Association?
