OkeShop returns to world tennis map

The US$ 20,000 OkeShop International Tennis Men’s Futures and Women’s Circuit Tournament will be slated from May 22-29 at Gelora Bung Karno Tennis Complex, Jakarta. It is OkeShop’s 4th consecutive year as main sponsor in partnership with Sportama. This co-event has attracted a strong field of entries, of which over half represent the younger generation of tennis players making their way to the top of their profession.

In men’s category, heading the field is Aussie Mark Verryth (rank ATP 524) who played Futures in Indonesia last year and 2008. Verryth will try to improve his 8-8 record so far this season after earning 2 titles in Japan and Mexico last year. A towering 6’6” Verryth will face some stiff challenge from Indonesian numero uno Christopher Rungkat (rank ATP 590) and also Japanese Arata Onozawa (rank ATP 597). Beside Rungkat who was a semi-finalist at OkeShop Men’s Futures Tournament last year, Bandung resident Elbert Sie (rank ATP 1051) is another Indonesian in the main draw.

In the women’s main draw, local players will be led by currently Indonesian number three Jessy Rompies (rank WTA 433) and followed by 2007 SEA Games’ gold medalist, Sandy Gumulya (rank WTA 535). Four more players also in the main draw are 16 years old Voni Darlina (rank WTA 845), Indonesia’s former junior queen Grace Sari Ysidora (rank WTA 907), hard hitter Cynthia Melita (rank WTA 919) and currently Indonesian junior number one Aldila Sutjiadi (rank WTA 1080). Two young Chinese players, Zhu Lin (rank WTA 645) and Yang Zi (rank WTA 815) along with Russian teenager Ksenia Kirillova (rank WTA 735) will add such fierce competition indeed. The qualifying rounds of this event will be held on May 22 & 23, while the main draw will commence on May 24.

By having Dunlop as the official ball, this international event will also hold “OkeShop Junior Classic” – a national junior tournament for 10 & Under, 12 & Under and 14 & Under. This particular competition is aimed to motivate young players in training rigorously so that they will strive for playing international junior circuits. In addition, Sportama will stage veteran tourney for the age of 40 years old and 50 years old with total prize money of 60 million rupiahs. With this veteran competition, it is hoped that this specific age group will maintain their tennis activity along with searching and developing young potential players. Moreover, it is important to maintain friendship among veterans as well as exchange experience on young age tennis development in their own region.

In the official press conference being held yesterday at Nan Xiang & Shanghai Cuisine Outlets which is located in The Sultan Hotel, Mr. Johannes Bima, Chief Marketing of PT Trikomsel Oke Tbk stated, “OkeShop International Tournament which began in 2008 – it is truly our commitment to support Indonesian tennis players’ achievement.” He also added that OkeShop has more than 800 shops allover Indonesia and through tennis players and their circles, we believe that they are our potential market. An international tourney is highly needed by Indonesian players to crank-up their world ranking. By getting better rank, they will have wide opportunity to enter other international tournaments. Therefore, it is the only way for Indonesian players to claim their highest performance.

Former Indonesian tennis queen, Yayuk Basuki continued her doubles' partnership with Hwang I-Hsuan of Chinese Taipei at "Rakuten Open Tennis Koddaert Ladies Open" with total prize money of US $ 100,000 which was held at Ariake Tennis Forest Park/Ariake Colosseum, Tokyo, Japan. Duo Basuki/Hwang crashed out instantly in the first round as they lost to Misaki Doi/Ryoko Fuda of Japan 6-4, 1-6, 2-10.

Meanwhile Indonesia's number two Sandy Gumulya still struggled at Mount Gambier 25k in Australia. In second round, she bowed out to Japanese eighth seed Chiaki Okadaue 4-6, 1-6.

At "Thailand Futures F4" with total prize money of US $ 10,000 which was held in Laksi, Thailand, Elbert Sie as direct entry main draw, he exited immediately in the first round (draw 32) as he was beaten by sixth seed Roman Jebavy of Czech Republic 1-6, 6-3, 2-6. In doubles' first round, Sie who partnered with Malaysian Adam Jaya also lost immediately after they were defeated by Hungarian duet and fourth seed Kornel Bardoczky/Adam Kellner 3-6, 2-6.

The last hope of Indonesia at Hong Kong Grade 4 tourney, top seed Laili Rahmawati Ulfa failed badly to taste her ITF Grade 4 maiden title. Rahmawati Ulfa was crushed by Japanese fourth seed and the eventual champion Eri Hozumi 1-6, 0-6.

Rungkat stumbles in second round, Tjuatjadarma crashes out immediately

Indonesian numero uno Christopher Rungkat came to "Uzbekistan F1 Futures" in Andijan as wild card recipient after Big Mama requested to the tourney committee while she was attending a conference in the land of Oleg Ogorodov. Only ranked at ATP 1426 and playing his first Futures of the season, Rungkat passed the first test as he disposed Russian Mikhail Fufygin (ATP 774) 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round. Rungkat, 19 years old, could not go further after he was beaten by seventh seed Pirmin Haenle of Germany 3-6, 6-7(3). In doubles, Rungkat partnered with Nikoloz Basilashvili from Georgia and they bowed out to second seed pair, Victor Kozin/Vaja Uzakov (Russia/Uzbekistan) 5-7, 4-6.

Meanwhile, 16 years old Michael Tjuatjadarma (ITF 473) crashed out instantly in the opening round of "Lee Duk Hee Cup Korea International Junior Championships 2009" in Seoul, South Korea this week. A fifth seed here at this ITF Grade 3 tourney, Tjuatjadarma lost to local qualifier Kim Ki-Hoon 1-6, 2-6 in the first round. Now, Tjuatjadarma can only rely on his doubles' performance with his partner, Mikita Karpovich from Belarus. Duo Karpovich and Tjuatjadarma is placed as second seed and they were successful to reach semi-finals. In the first round, Karpovich/Tjuatjadarma won over local pair, An Byeong-Mo/Jeong Ilyoung 6-3, 6-4. Then in quarterfinals, duo Belarus and Indonesia was forced into three sets before they defeated Japanese duet, Kazuma Kawachi/Kaichi Uchida 0-6, 7-5, 10-8. In the last four round, Karpovich/Tjuatjadarma will clash with fourth seed pair from South Korea, Kwon Yong-Jae/Lee Dae-Hee.

Last week at "Jeju International Junior Championships 2009" in Jeju, South Korea, as seventh seed Tjuatjadarma received first round bye and he bowed out to local player, Nam Ji-Sung 3-6, 4-6 in the second round (round 32). At this ITF Grade 4 tourney, as top seed pair in doubles, Tjuatjadarma partnered with Japanese Genki Hosoya and they got opening round bye. In the second round, they were ousted by local duo, Jeong Suk-Young/Jeong Yeon-Woo 0-6, 5-7.

Notable Indonesians at the recent Lion tourney

A number of Indonesians competed at the inaugural Racket Sports Asia Tennis Championships and it was quite a mixture of very young and old players for sure. Some notable players were sixth seed Andrian Raturandang, eighth seed Sulistyo Wibowo, older brother of Liza Andriyani, then tenth seed Marco Sitepu, 32nd seed Ivan Regan Krijanto and also Imanuel Prabowo. Raturandang, father of a little boy, finished as quarter-finalist as he gave such fight to the eventual runner-up and third seed, Cho Soong-Jae of South Korea, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6. Meanwhile 39 years old Wibowo also made all the way into quarter-final when he eventually lost to top seed and the eventual winner Kim Dylan 2-6, 1-6. Sitepu, who is running a tennis school in Kuala Lumpur and is 40 years old, gave walk over to Japanese Shoki Kasahara in the second round. Krijanto ended-up in third round (round 16) as he bowed out to 4th seed Malaysian Yew Ming Si 2-6, 2-6. Last but not least, unseeded Prabowo, recent graduate of Chicago State University, had to be content with his second round result as he defeated by 22nd seed Lee Doo Hyen of South Korea, 3-6, 7-5, 3-6.

In men's doubles beside Raturandang who captured the title with Thai Peerakiat "Nack" Siriluethaiwattana, third seed Wibowo partnered with Sugiharta and they ended in the semi-final when they bowed out top seed pair Kim/Cho of South Korea 1-6, 3-6.

Montinee "Ploy" Tangphong of Thailand placed as top seed but she lost to her compatriot Varanya "Kaew" Vijuksanaboon 1-6, 1-6 in the semi-final. En route to the final, third seed Liza Andriyani breezed past 13 years younger, Trivena Monika Putri of Medan, North Sumatra, 1-6, 2-6 in quarter-final. In the semi-final, Andriyani ousted second seed Wynne Prakusya 6-4, 7-5.

Top seed pair Tangphong/Vijuksanaboon lost walk over to Eunice Chew/Hannah Chew of Singapore in the second round. Second seed duo Wynne Prakusya/Ivana Prakusya bowed out to the eventual champion, unseeded pair of North Sumatra Trivena Monika Putri/Dede Tari Kusrini 2-6, 2-6 in the quarter-final.

Better late than never - from Singapore, Indonesians showed their advantage

Former Fed Cup team member and once world ranked 471, Liza Andriyani proved her ability as she won the title at the inaugural Racket Sports Asia Tennis Championships for women's singles category which ended on February 8, 2009. Third seed Indonesian Andriyani claimed the crown after defeating fourth seed Thai, Varanya "Kaew" Vijuksanaboon 6-4, 6-2. It was indeed a perfect birthday present for herself, as Andriyani turned 30 years old four days later.

But then, Andriyani and her 36 years old Malaysian doubles' partner, Lela Zainal fell 7-5, 4-6, 3-6 to younger Indonesian pair, 17 years old Trivena Monika Putri and 21 years old Dede Tari Kusrini of North Sumatra in the women's doubles final.

The tournament, which started on January 30, 2009 boasted a total prize purse of SGD $ 25,000. It attracted 258 entries in four categories of men's singles and doubles, women's singles and doubles.

In the men's singles category, top seed and the world No. 683 Kim Dylan Seong-Kwan of South Korea defeated compatriot and 2008 Roland Garros Junior Championships quarter-finalist Cho Soong Jae 6-4, 6-2 at the Kallang Tennis Centre to pocket SGD $ 3,500 winner's prize money. 23 years old Kim's biggest career win came in last May's South Korean Futures tournament in Jaeju. Kim's first visit to Singapore finished on a mixed note. Kim and Myong Ji University teammate Cho lost to the Thai-Indonesian pairing of up and coming Peerakiat "Nack" Siriluethaiwattana and veteran Andrian Raturandang 6-0, 5-7, 6-7 (3-7) in the men's doubles final.

Tedjakusuma will lead the 2009 campaign along with two young girls

Surabaya born Romana Tedjakusuma will start her 2009 pro tour in Boca Raton, Florida as she is listed as number 9 in qualifying round as at December 31, 2008. Tedjakusuma ended her ranking at 360, while Sandy Gumulya at WTA 296. In this 25K tourney, the surface is going to be on clay and it is indeed quite challenging for the players. Top seed is American Angela Haynes (WTA 139) and the main draw will begin on January 12, 2009. Tedjakusuma will continue on to play at Lutz, Florida - another 25K tourney and it will be played on clay also. She is listed as number 18 in qualifying round as per December 30, 2008. Haynes is still the top seed in this tournament which will start on January 19, 2009.

In girls' category, updates have been released as at today - December 31, 2008 for all three tournaments in Australia. At Traralgon ITF grade 1, Beatrice Gumulya is number 9 in the main draw, while her compatriot Grace Sari Ysidora has moved up to number 37 also in the main draw. In Nottinghill ITF Grade 1, Gumulya is now number 12 in the main draw, while Ysidora has jumped to number 5 in qualifying round. At the prestigious Aussie Open Grand Slam, Gumulya is number 16 of the main draw list and last but not least, Ysidora has slightly climbed-up to number 14 in qualifying round.

In the meantime, two other junior players David Agung Susanto and Nadia Frederika withdrew from all three tournaments as per December 26, 2008 with undisclosed personal reasons.

Gearing-up for world tennis treats from Beijing, Nonthaburi & Seoul

China Open 2008 will hold its annual ATP and WTA tournaments at the same time this coming week. With total prize money of US $ 524,000, ATP China Open promises great matches from day to day until September 28, 2008. Top seed David Ferrer of Spain gets first round bye and waits for the winner of first round match between Nicolas Delvider of France and Israelian Dudi Sela. Second seeded Andy Roddick also receives first round bye. Roddick just lost to Ferrer in Davis Cup's semi-final this week-end and he will face either qualifier or Croat Roko Karanusic.

Third seeded Chilean Fernando Gonzalez gets first round bye and waits for wild card Yan Bai from China or Japanese Go Soeda in the second round. Fourth seeded Richard Gasquet of France also receives first round bye and will meet qualifier or Lu Yen-Hsun of Chinese Taipei in the second round. Wild card and fifth seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain will face American Bobby Reynolds in the opening round, while sixth seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo will play against his compatriot Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the first round. Resurging German Rainer Schuettler is placed as seventh seeded and is to face Ivan Navarro-Pastor of Spain in the first round. last but not least, eight seeded Sam Querrey from USA will play his first round match against his fellow countryman, Jesse Levine.

Meanwhile in the WTA event with total prize money of US $ 600,000 a world class showdown is ready to go. Same as last week in Tokyo, two Serbs Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic topped the draw here at Beijing Tennis Center. Top seeded Jankovic will have first round bye and will meet qualifier or Virginie Razzano from France in the second round. Struggling second seeded Ana Ivanovic also gets bye in the first round and waits for either qualifier or Alize Cornet from France. The undoubtedly strongest player in the last three months, Dinara Safina is the third seeded of the tourney and is waiting to meet the first round's winner between wild card Li Na of China or Italian Francesca Schiavone. Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova is fourth seeded and is also directly into the second round to play either qualifier or wild card Peng Shuai from China. Fifth seeded Vera Zvonareva from Russia will play her opening round against Spaniard Annabel Medina Garrigues, while sixth seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska will be challenged by 2008 Wimbledon semi-finalist, Zheng Jie of China in the first round battle. Another struggling player after injury is seventh seeded Daniela Hantuchova and she is scheduled to meet Argentinian Gisela Dulko in the first round and finally eight seeded Anna Chakvetadze from Russia will face Danish Caroline Wozniacki in the opening round.

ATP Thailand Open 2008 is entering its sixth year with total prize money of US $ 576,000. The venue is at Impact Arena of Muang Thong Thani in Nonthaburi outside of metropolitan Bangkok. World number three Novak Djokovic from Serbia is the top seed at the most prestigious ATP event in South East Asia. Djokovic receives first round bye and waits for either French Julian Benneteau or qualifier. Second seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France also gets first round bye. In the second round Tsonga will play either qualifier or Benjamin Becker from Germany. Third and fourth seededs are Czech Tomas Berdych and French Gael Monfils, they both also get first round bye. In the second round Berdych will meet either Italian Simone Bolelli or Thomas Bellucci of Brazil, while Monfils waits for opening match's winner between American Robert Kendrick or qualifier.

The remaining seededs are to play their first round. Fifth seeded lefty Jarkko Nieminen fo Finland will challenged by wild card and younger brother of top seed, Marko Djokovic. Sixth seeded Robin Soderling is to face qualifier; seventh seeded Marat Safin will play against German Philipp Petzschner and eight seeded Austrian Jurgen Melzer will meet young American, Donald Young.

WTA Tier IV "Hansol Korea Open" is topped with world ranked 27 Maria Kirilenko of Russia and world number 35 Israelian Shahar Peer in the draw. Other matches in the first round are featuring Roland Garros quarter-finalist this year, Estonian Kaia Kanepi is placed as third seeded and is to play against former top 50s, Jamea Jackson from USA who is currently at WTA 271; fourth seeded young Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro will face former top 30s Klara Zakopalova of Czech Republic; fifth seeded and world ranked 50 Pauline Parmentier of France will play against unknown wild card from Korea, Han Sung-Hee; sixth seeded Pole Marta Domachowska will meet Uzbekistan's number one, Akgul Amanmuradova. The remaining seededs are seventh seeded New Zealander Marina Erakovic and eight seeded Taiwanese Chan Yung-Jan. In the first round Erakovic will face experienced Samantha Stosur of Australia, while Chan will meet Mara Santangelo from Italy. Santangelo has been struggling with foot injury and her ranking is now WTA 183.
