Gumulya won doubles title in Nottinghill, Ysidora into qualifying final of Aussie Open 2009
Beatrice Gumulya with her Thai doubles partner, Kanyapat Narattana grabbed doubles title at "Optus Nottinghill Junior ITF International" in Nottinghill Tennis Club, Glen Waverley, Victoria, Australia. This ITF Grade 1 tourney started on January 16, 2009 and in today's final duo Gumulya/Narattana were proven to be better in defeating third seed pair, Anna Orlik/Laura Robson (Belarus/Great Britain) 6-4, 7-5. It was such nice revenge after duo Indonesia and Thailand lost to third seed duet of Orlik/Robson 6-7(5), 3-6 in the final of "ITF Grade 1 Eddie Herr International Junior Tennis Championships" last December in Bradenton, Florida. En route to final here in Nottinghill, a couple of notable victories by Gumulya/Narattana were in the second round when they edged past eighth seed duet of Zuzana Luknarova/Sandra Zaniewska (Slovakia/Poland) 6-4, 6-0 and in the semi-final as they outclassed top seed pair of Miyabi Inoue/Noppawan "Nok" Lertcheewakarn (Japan/Thailand) 6-2, 6-1.
At this tourney, Gumulya was placed as ninth seed in the singles main draw and she clinched her first victory of 2009 by defeating Czech Martina Kubicikova (ITF 77) 6-3, 6-3. In round 32, 18 years old Gumulya bowed out to 15 years old Silvia Njiric of Croatia 3-6, 2-6. While Gumulya's younger compatriot Grace Sari Ysidora (ITF 123 as per January 12, 2009) suffered another first round exit when she lost to sixth seed Zarina Diyas (Kazakhstan/ITF 18) 4-6, 4-6. Diyas is 15 years old and has been living and also trained in Prague, Czech Republic. Her maiden junior title was at "2007 Safina Cup" Grade 4 in Prague then she added another title at "DHL Cup-20th Czech International Junior Indoor Championships" in Prerov which was held in January 2008. At this Grade 1 tourney, en route to final, in the last eight round Diyas won over British Laura Robson in three sets. Robson then came out as 2008 Wimbledon champion few months later.
In pro level, Diyas is currently ranked at WTA 565 and as wild card she was successful to claim the title at 25K tourney in Ashtana, Kazakhstan last November. In the quarter-final, Diyas made an upset by defeating second seed Sodia Shapatava of Georgia (now WTA 243). When Ysidora lost to this Kazakhstan prodigy, in the first set Ysidora trailed 1-4 but she managed rally with better tactics to reach 4-4 then she admitted that she lacked of focus in critical points and lost 4-6. In the second set, game by game became quite close until 4-4 again but then in the end Diyas secured her 6-4 victory.
In doubles Ysidora for the very first time partnered with 17 years old Thai, Nicha Lertpitaksinchai here in Nottinghill. This week Ysidora/Lertpitaksinchai made quite good result as quarter-finalists. They began with first round win after they stopped the challenge of Tamara Curovic/Andrea Konjuh (Serbia/Croatia) 7-6(7), 6-2. In the second round, duo Thailand and Indonesia fought hard to beat Czech pair, Martina Borecka/Nartina Kubicikova 7-5, 6-4. In the quarter-final, duo Ysidora/Lertpitaksinchai stated that they did not play as good as the day before and were ousted by Richel Hogenkamp/Quirine Lemoine from the Netherlands 3-6, 4-6.
Today in the first round of qualifying for Aussie Open, sixth seed Ysidora cruised past wild card Elizabeth Searl from Australia (ITF 389) 6-2, 6-1. It was certainly a sweet first win of the new season for this 15 years old Jakarta born. In the qualifying final, Ysidora will face her nemesis, 14th seed "tomboy" Luksika Kumkhum (ITF 151) of Thailand. Both players tied 2-2 in their U-14 head to head, while in ITF junior circuit at "LTAT Thailand Grade 2" in Nonthaburi last October, Kumkhum won over Ysidora 6-4, 6-3 in round 16.
In the first tourney of "Loy Yang Power Traralgon Junior ITF International", Gumulya paired-up with Lertcheewakarn and placed as top seed. Duo Gumulya/Lertcheewakarn ended-up in the semi-final after they were beaten by third seed pair, Kristina Mladenovic/Silvia Njiric (France/Croatia) 3-6, 7-5, 5-10. Mladenovic/Njiric then were victorious in the final after they gunned down eighth seed Czech pair, Borecka/Kubicikova 6-4, 6-3.
Meanwhile, first time in partnership, Katherine Westbury of New Zealand and Ysidora immediately lost to eighth seed Czech pair, Borecka/Kubicikova 6-1, 6-7(4),6-10 in the first round.

Tedjakusuma keeps inspiring despite losses in singles & doubles
Romana Tedjakusuma has not found her good form yet so far, but indeed she is still inspiring many people and personally, I hope the younger players could learn from what she has been doing till now. No doubt, she is very committed and at the same time very discipline athlete. In her first tourney of 2009 season at "Champion Porsche $ 25,000 Challenger" in Boca Raton, Florida, Tedjakusuma was placed as fourth seed in the singles' qualifying round. In the first round of qualifying, this Surabaya born saw off Jasmina Tinjic of Croatia 6-3, 6-3. On January 11, 2009 when both players battled on clay court, Tedjakusuma was ranked at WTA 359 while 17 years old Tinjic was at WTA 541. In the second round of qualifying 15 years old Croat Ajla Tomljanovic beaten 32 years old "veteran" and the scoreline was 6-4, 6-2. At that time, Tomljanovic was at WTA 973. Eventually Tomljanovic cruised through into the main draw and she made a major upset by defeating 24 years old top seed and experienced Angela Haynes from USA (WTA 141) in quite grueling match which she prevailed 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-1 in the first round.
Despite only playing ITF junior circuit called "31st International Casablanca Junior Cup" in Tlalnepantla, Mexico prior to this sunshine Florida tourney, Tomljanovic gained benefit with six matches on hard court as warm-up which then truly paid-off. Playing her seventh Grade A tourneys of her career, finally second seed Tomljanovic (ITF 16) got her maiden title in ITF junior circuit upon defeating top seed Ana Bogdan of Romania (ITF 6) 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(5).
Returning to inspiring Tedjakusuma, in doubles she partnered with Tetiana Luzhanska of Ukraine for eight times cooperation. In the opening round, they outclassed Argentinian duo, Soledad Esperon/Florencia Molinero 6-2, 6-1. In the quarter-final, duet Luzhanska/Tedjakusuma lost to second seed US pair Christina Fusano/Angela Haynes 4-6, 3-6.
Once recorded as round 32 finisher at 1994 Aussie Open, Tedjakusuma continued on to play qualifying round at "Ace Sports Group Tennis Classic" in Lutz, Florida. Still being held on clay and with the same amount of $ 25,000 in total prize money, the top seed of qualifying round was wild card and 32 years old Mashona Lakuta Washington of USA, while Tedjakusuma placed as seventh seed. In the opening round of qualifying, Tedjakusuma dispatched South African Kelly Anderson 6-2, 6-1. Then in second round of qualifying, Tedjakusuma experienced "de javu" as she lost to Mirjana Lucic of Croatia 3-6, 3-6. Lucic is now 26 years old and is a resident of Tampa, Florida. Once she was known as "wonder kid" when she became semi-finalist at 1999 Wimbledon and also reached her highest rank ever at WTA 32. This week Lucic is ranked at WTA 434 and she surely traveled all the way to this tourney from a Sony Ericsson WTA Tour's International Series known as "ASB Classic" in Auckland, New Zealand when she bowed out to Anne Keothavong of Great Britain 4-6, 2-6 in the first round.
Pairing-up again with Luzhanska in doubles, in the first round this duo of Ukraine and Indonesia clinched their victory over Simona Dobra/Monika Kochanova (Czech Republic/Slovakia) 7-6(4), 6-0. In the last eight round, Luzhanska/Tedjakusuma had to pack-up their belongings after they got defeated by third seed US pair, Story Tweedie-Yates/Mashona Lakuta Washington 6-2, 4-6, 7-10.

Gumulya & Ysidora had bitter start of the season
The current number one national junior player, 18 years old Beatrice Gumulya (ITF 27) and number two national junior player, 15 years old Grace Sari Ysidora (ITF 127) both crashed out in the first round or round 64 at "Loy Yang Power Traralgon Junior ITF International" - an ITF Grade 1 tourney being held in Traralgon, Victoria today. As 8th seeded, Gumulya bowed out to 14 years old Tamara Curovic (ITF 183) 1-6, 6-7(5). Curovic hails from Beograd, Serbia and started to play tennis when she was 9 years old. She only began her ITF junior tour since March, 2008 and in her 10th tourney Curovic was successful to claim her maiden title at "Nokia Junior Cup" Grade 4 in Vierumaki, Finland last October. She continued on her high note by grabbing another ITF Grade 4 title at "TaTS Open" in Tampere, Finland. In contrast, Gumulya just got her maiden title of ITF Grade 4 in Solo last November when she was 2 months shy from 18 years old.
Ysidora also lost to 17 years old wild card Brittany Sheed of Australia 3-6, 6-3, 3-6. Based on the information from Ysidora's coach, Deddy Tedjamukti, Sheed had much better power than Ysidora and she was simply overpowered his student. Sheed is currently at ITF 591 and it is due to her one year absence from ITF junior circuit. Her best rank was once at ITF 56 in April 2007. Over her junior career Sheed has collected 4 titles and they were at Adelaide Grade 4, Morocco Grade 4, back to back Darwin Grade 3 and all of these were in 2006. Since March till December 2008, she had played only senior pro tour and now her ranking is at WTA 548.
Both Gumulya and Ysidora will continue to play singles' consolation round. Then in doubles, Gumulya is partnered with world junior number one Noppawan Lertcheewakarn of Thailand and this pair is indeed the top seeded. Duo Gumulya/Lertcheewakarn will have an opening match against Thai pair, Kumkhum Luksika/Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul. Meanwhile, Ysidora was approached by Katherine Westbury's father as soon as she arrived at the venue last Wednesday and he asked Ysidora to play doubles with his daughter. Westbury is from New Zealand but she is currently resident of Sydney, Australia. Duet Westbury/Ysidora will have tough opening battle against 8th seeded Martina Borecka/Martina Kubicikova from Czech Republic. While Westbury and Ysidora are pairing for the very first time, the Czech duo started their partnership since January 2007 and they have shared just one title of Grade 2 at Mar Del Plata, Argentina out of 10 tournaments they have played together.
Top seed Lertcheewakarn or known as Nok had topsy turvy opening match today. Nok forced to fight hard before she eventually saw off an Aussie wild card, Sophie Letcher (IYF 296) 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. With her current WTA 156, despite her ITF rank is only at 496, lefty Russian Ksenia Pervak is placed as second seed. She reached her best junior rank at ITF 5 in 2007. Today in the first round, she breezed past an Aussie lucky loser Emma Ford 6-0, 6-1.
