First round threepeat by Rungkat in Malaysia Futures 2
Christopher Rungkat continued his target to move up his world rank at "Malaysia F2 Futures" in Petaling Jaya, Selangor after last week first round exit in the opening leg of Malaysia Futures. With total prize money of US $ 15,000, as wild card recipient, Rungkat had quite good draw actually. In only his 6th tournaments this year, the doubles' champion of 2008 French Open Junior Grand Slam with Finnish Henri Kontinen (see picture with Kontinen at Wimbledon 2008), Rungkat still struggled and failed to pass the first round indeed. He crashed out immediately to qualifier Zhang Ze of China (ATP 1091) 2-6, 6-7(4) today. Zhang is also 18 years old and was just departed from his junior career same as Rungkat. It was Rungkat's first round defeat for the fifth time this season and he made threepeat indeed as first round loser.
Last week in Kuala Lumpur, Rungkat consoled himself and ensured his strong reputation as doubles specialist. Partnered with American Nathan Thompson, duo Rungkat/Thompson as fourth seeded took their third title as pair by beating third seeded pair of Siarhei Betau/Andrei Karatchenia from Belarus 6-3, 6-4. Previously in the semi-final, Rungkat/Thompson defeated second seeded pair Im Kyu-Tae/Martin Slanar (South Korea/Austria) 1-6, 6-3, 10-7.
This week, Rungkat continued his doubles partnership with Thompson and retained their seeded from last week. In the opening round, Rungkat/Thompson survived the three sets battle and won over South Korean pair, Im Kyu-Tae/Kim Sun-Yong 7-6(4), 5-7, 10-8.
